My 3-year Major Service on a 360

~1 month ago I purchased a 2002 Euro-spec 360 (6spd) with 7,800 miles. This car had every service record since import (import with only a few hundred miles). So I had her taken to a Ferrari dealer for the major service because it had been 3 years since that had been performed (though I understand I could have waited longer).

For anyone interested, here is a list of what they did and prices. Numbers in parenthesis indicate quantity and dollar amounts equal total quantity cost.

I feel this is a fair amount to pay every 3 years.

 

They changed the timing belts without change the tensioners?
I’m curious why!

 

I was wondering about the tensioners as well.

 

...not sure about the tensioners. I'll wait for other feedback and address all the issues with the dealer to find out.

 

That was not only not a major service it was not even a complete belt job.


If they represented that to you as a major service you got screwed.


That was a cheapo incomplete belt service and a cheapo incomplete annual service combined.

 

so what's missing?

 

OK - if that is incomplete, what should a full yearly with belts include? Whjat should it cost at a deler - independent shop?

We don't need a list of every part and price, just a list of the items to be performed and approximate cost of each item.

 

Gaskets, Coolant flushing, sparks plugs, diferential mesh filter, motor oil mesh filter, ect...

 

What Brian refers is that when a timing belt change is performed, the tensioners need to be replaced to be sure everything is safe since that particular job is the most dangerous.
Changing the tensioners is what really takes a lot of effort and work!
It seems that they only swap belts on your car and that are not allowed and has been discussed before.

 

They indicated bels tensioners came with the belt package, but were not itemized on my invoice.

 

First, we need to distinguish between tensioners and tensioner bearings. They are not the same thing.

Second, its hard to imagine you got either tensioners or tensioner bearings in the pricing listed above, unless something is mathematically very askew.

 

I also asked about the coolant - they checked it and it was OK.

Again, this place has had my car every year since 2003.

I just got off the phone with the service manager and he said that they did everything they could on that car that was needed. I asked if there was anything else that he recommended and he said if there were -- he'd try to sell it to me.

He also mentioned the tensioners are more difficult (ie time consuming) on a 430. I asked for the third time if the tensioners were included on my car and he said yes.

I'm satisfied.

 

The reference to the F430 reminds me of a bunny with a pancake on its head. I'm not sure why it's relevant to anything on your car.

 

hmmm..... I don't know about this shop. They do alot of belt services on 430's???

Maybe a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway... What state did the work take place, and does it matter?

(Wondering if requirements are different depending upon the state that you live)

 

OK, if you feel my motives are strictly commercial, I'll bow out of this thread.

I was trying to offer some insight that the price you paid most likely did not include tensioners or tensioner bearings. The issue of whether you "need" them is not my call -- I am not a professional Ferrari tech and the need for those items is solely between the shop, your car, and you.

I'll go to the sidelines and just watch. Sorry.

The 430 comment was just regarding overall labor price -- I was told it took much longer to do the tensioner (bearing) on the 430.

 

Mind sharing the name of the shop? I want to put them on my list of places NOT to visit....

 

FWIW, Tensioner bearings are commonly replace during belt exchange service on 360's but Hydraullic tensioners are often not changed unless there is specific reason to do so.

 

There are no belt tensioners on a 430 because they dont have timing belts. There is no way tensioner bearings were included in your price. Further coolant is changed because of chemical changes that destroy the cooling system components. A simple test of its freezing protection which is the test that is performed will not show this.


To accuse Daniel of providing you with correct information as a ploy to get your money is unfounded, unfair and untrue. He is one of the most respected sponsors here as well as one of the most respected parts suppliers for Ferrari in North America.

Personally I feel you owe him an apology.


If your dealer serviced the car in the way described it was grossly misleading to refer to it as a major service. Additonally if they serviced your car in the way detailed they are doing you a disservice.

Now,
The 3 yr service as described by Ferrari SPA does not require coolant exchange, The coolant is tested for thermal protection and integrity. Spark Plugs are changed every 30,000km (not by Time) . The Belt sexchange service IS BY NATURE a major service with oil, gear oil ,brake fluid, and pollen filters replaced.

 

Probably not fair for me to share the shop's name. Too much incomplete information regarding what they did or didn't do, and what should and should not be done.

 

Brian specifically stated the reason to change the coolant and a hydrometer giving it the pass was not sufficient.

I'm still trying figure out what was slanderous about his statement.

 

I think terms such as "acuse" and "ploy" are overstated.

I felt the pancake analogy was a bit of a poke so I poked back a little. No biggie.
