This is an impressive car. Aside from the Alitalia paint job (it was yellow when raced), it is just as it was when it finished the final stage of the 50+ rallies it competed on in period. Impressive is an understatement. I was lucky enough to spend 5 hours in it today. Perfect day for driving. If I could sum the car up in one word I'd say RAW. The dog box sounded awesome, the sound, the smell, the sound, the handling, the sound, the grip, the sound, the braking, the sound........ get the idea. A motorcyclist pulled up alongside and commented on how the car had made his day. He loved following it watching the flames coming out the back. So yes a very impressive car. I'll be honest and say it wasn't the most comfortable car I've been in and I was surprised that we were actually able to have a conversation while driving even though we both had ear plugs in. Anywhoo, we get to Reefton and the owner pulls in to a tavern because we were going to have a beer. That didn't happen, phew. So he says its time for you to have a drive. I said no I was happy to be a passenger and he insisted I drive it. Now I only had my Berkies on and tried using that as an excuse. Didn't work. I haven't driven a LHD with manual shift, to which he said along the lines of dont be a big girls blouse, drive the bloody thing I insist. So we swap over and I jump in the drivers seat. First thing I notice is that the drivers seat is more comfortable. Then in bare feet I realise how bloody hot these things are, the pedals had to be 40 degrees plus and when driving occasionally I'd get this really hot air blowing over my feet. I said Im gunna have blisters tomorrow but its worth it. So after being educated on how to start it, I start the car. Like most people you never want to over rev a car you are driving that you dont own. Now with race cars you HAVE to rev them and then drop the clutch so I managed to get it going OK without bunny hopping or burning out the clutch. Now I was told to shift hard, dont ***** foot around with a dog box. The only other car Ive been in with a dog box was 360Cs N-GT. Now this gearbox is just beautiful. I didnt find the LHD to be as hard to drive as I first thought. So I got to drive to Marysville which is 40km of perfect roads. Not one car in sight. Best fun you can have with your clothes on. The gearbox was awesome. I stuffed up a few times in particular going from 4th back to 3rd which interestingly was the same problem I had driving my 308 at Mallala so its a problem with me. I need to resolve that. Ive always said you can stick your paddle shifts (sorry guys no disrespect meant) but theres just nothing like heel toeing down the gears and in particular this gearbox. I managed on a few occasions to nail the 5th to 4th to 3rd to 2nd. Now that didnt happen every time, but when I did I just couldnt stop smiling and in fact while typing this the grin is from ear to ear. Now to the handling. WOW, just WOW. I was only driving to around 40% according to the owner but I felt I was going fast. The steering is so direct and light. Unbelievable feedback. Hardly used the brakes and on a couple of occasions I felt I was carrying possibly a little too much speed into the corner and yet this thing just turned with no complaint at all. No over steer and no under steer. Apparently the car has been set up to have under steer but I didnt feel it. So we stopped at Marysville and we were both wet through. I bought 2 600ml bottles of water and finished them in 10 seconds. I was asked to drive the car home but Id had enough plus I wanted to see and experience the car being driven properly. Great day. Thanks to the owner who some know. It's the only time I've ever appreciated getting a headache.
Cool man, thats great! You're a lucky boy. Getting to ride in some nice machines. I feel so isolated when I read stories like this. Talked to my mate just before, doesnt holiday out of here much and he told me my Ferrari is the only Ferrari he has seen in person and been in.
I drove through Pleasant View Cres this morning on my way home; stunning 180 deg views, enormous blocks of land, huge mansions, quiet, leafy location and not far (timewise) from anywhere you need to go. It's the best street in this part in Melbourne.
sounds fantatsic Brettski. what an adventure. of course, he should have told you to buy your own, like I would have.
(sorry guys no disrespect meant) but theres just nothing like heel toeing down the gears and in particular this gearbox. Especially with real heels and real toes LOL
You lucky bastard Brettski, you just drove one of the greatest rally cars in history Sounds like a great day!
if he did then he really is a girl's blouse My ex had to drive my fiat124sport for a month with no clutch when the clutch cable broke, couldn't believe it when I got home from the US that she had learnt how to start and then drive the car with no clutch :eeek: I had some trouble on the way home and she was telling me how to put it in gear All I can say is that Italians make very good starter motors and very tough gearboxes
It's a good area and yep, great views. Biti hazzy today though. 20 mins to city, 20 mins to work and more importantly 15 mins to the Dandenongs for fantastic driving roads. Image Unavailable, Please Login
