you are right on the reason. img tags link to photo hosts or servers and as soon as the link goes bad or expires then so does the photo. especially for a history and info archive site like FerrariChat it is important we maintain the images. what % of images would still be around with IMG tags 1 month, 1 year, 10 years, 25 years?
How about sub forums for modified Ferrari and race cars? How about letting original posters moderate their own threads? -Being able to delete(but not edit) posts that the OP may find to be inappropriate, or unnecessary. Is there a way to re-read sent PM's?
Yes there is. When you go to your Private Messages, you will see how much you have used, under that, there is a drop down menu that says Jump to Folder:, click that and make the Inbox go to Sent. That's about it. You should see your PMs below.
You should allow larger images to be hosted then. I have amazing photos I took at the Canadian Grand Prix this year but I can't post them because I can't use img tags to link to where I have them hosted, and the system you have doesn't allow for large enough images to do them any justice.
Here's my tuppence worth! (and I'm trying to express this with a certain amount of Tongue in cheek!) Tidy the forum up.. eg: go into many sections and you will see individual threads, often, with the title.. Thinking of buying a 458 Went and test drove a 458 Sold my left kidney to fund 458 What colour 458 should I get Ordered my 458 Waiting for my 458 What's the current value of a 458 should I sell my order My 458 arrives next week Here's some pics of my 458 at the dealers My 458 arrives tomorrow Here's some pics of my 458 being delivered My 458 arrived with 20miles on it, WHO'S BEEN DRIVING IT? I have driven my 458 for 3 miles and I'm now worried about it's resale value Washed and polished my 458 and parked it in the garage, here's some pics. Went for a drive in my 458 this morning and it's now done 59 miles, what's it worth? Noticed a stone chip on my 458, will it affect it's value? Took my wife out in the 458 for the 1st time this morning, she likes it so I took some pictures Went and met some F-chatters for a Coffee this morning talked about depeciation of my 458 Noticed my car has 99 miles on it, needs a service or should I sell? OK.. They all seem a bit pedantic but if you look at the forum without rosso corsa coloured glasses on that's what you see! Look in the Lamborghini Chat section and there's a thread for each model and that's it! In the Ferrari model specific sections just have single threads for single events! My new 458 thread. Driving your 458, post pics here. Thread. 458 depreciation thread. 458 service costs thread. Why didn't I get a fire extinguisher installed in my 458 thread. Ok, I know a forum of this size takes some looking after but it's not helped by members starting threads everytime they have something to say.. Is it not better to have one individual thread where owners can eulogise over their purchase than a lot of White noise of threads recounting members every individual thought.. It sometimes seems as though some members are so desperate to be noticed/recognised. What happening is that all the real important stuff/threads is being diluted because of the sheer quantity of 1 or 2 page threads of meaningless dross.
Maybe a first step is to relabel "Architecture, Design and Visual Arts" to include a reference to Real Estate/Home Improvement.
We have thought about this in the past, but then if you know where you are going best to post in that regional subforum to get the local knowledge. Now if you are just posting about past trips or open to suggestions then a travel subforum would work, but still not sure there is enough activity. Before creating another subforum I like to see 5-10 active threads a week that would be located in that new subforum.
Should go in Other Racing, Vintage, or base Model depending on which car. as you say edits would be bad... Original post: Are you a nice guy that likes Ferraris? Someone responds: Yes Post edited to: Are you a jerk that has inferiority complex and a small Dino? Even deleting posts by thread starter doesn't work and would be too political. We have had problems in past, but we try so hard to have moderator teams or defer to group mod decisions that are impartial and as fair as they can be. 85k moderators would not be fair. Have save copy of sent PM's turned on (User CP) and then you can resend or reforward.
Our only real option is going to thumbnails, we can still make the thumbnail 800 pixels like inline images now, but then you could open them for higher resolution. In most cases if you know how to convert a highres picture correctly you can still make it look great at 800 pixels. Our limit for 800 pixels is pretty high at 300k or so.
I understand what you are saying, but don't agree. It is all the imperfect science of taxonomy. The extremes would range from one thread for all of FerrariChat.com with 5,000 posts in it a day to hundreds and hundreds of subforums. 99% of the time I have to fight users against wanting new subforums (DIY, Modified, Travel, etc). I guess the 1% is your view of wanting hardly any subforums and threads. We have about 80 subforums right now and I think that is about 10 too many, that is why I fight new subforums so hard. Simply put why your suggestion doesn't work is one of the beauties of FerrariChat.com is being efficient. Users should be able to efficiently ask a specific question or search for the same question and have the answers neatly displayed without having to filter through irrelevant posts like you have in the "mass" threads. The one good thing about "mass" threads is for the people that have the time and desire to read EVERYTHING about that model. They are able to visit daily and catch up easily on all new posts in that one thread. It is harder for them to catch up on all things if thumbing through 20 new threads. It is all a balance and the taxonomy we use in one subforum doesn't work in others and "mass" threads like the Bikini one do make more sense. I'm still not a fan of the Joe Sackey threads.
I've said it before, but.........it sure would be nice to have 'previous thread/next thread' at the top of the page also. It seems to be a given on other sites I visit.
Thats still really low to give these shots any justice I feel. Just tell me that this doesn't look stunning at the resolution its at, which is reduced quite a bit from what it came out of my camera. http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc154/mrbucket777/wallpaper1-1.jpg At 300k it wouldn't look so great. You wouldn't get the rippling from the heat.
I know what you are saying.. and its your forum! my thoughts were just that when i hit the new posts search facility i get 5 or 6 pages of the same stuff... it there was a "458 Random discussion thread" and then a "458 new arrivals thread" then it would condense it all down an awful lot.. sometimes theres an awful lot of, dare i say it, dross in there.. yes condensed threads would take some reading after a few days away from the place and yes there is some tooing and throwing trying to catch up.. Its just my bit of utopia but i suppose the logistical issues of policing, constantly tweaking and moving threads in the place precludes that!
Skimming the Beating Procrastination thread I saw Wax's offer to "temp-ban" folks at their request. It got me thinking that a self-ban feature would be useful for me. There have been many hours (and days) that I've lost to FChat when I should have spent at least part of the time doing other things. Fortunately I finished college before I discovered FChat! So what about a self-ban/hibernate account feature in selectable 24 hour increments?
Perhaps its been brought up elsewhere, but when people post a topic about a part, a repair, a fix for something, it may be helpful for people to be able to put in certain key words somewhere that allows an easier search for that topic? Add an option at the bottom of the post for people to add those search terms.
I've seen this in other online forums...the ability to view all of the images in a thread rather than click through the pages to see them. Not sure if that is an option on VB.
