    Agreed.
This is the type of BS that will get the thread shut.

Had the whole thread been started there in the first place, I really think it
wouldn't be quite the mess it is now - Google done us wrong, IMO.

It needs to play out to completion before any judgements about Google or Jalopnik are passed.

    A thirteen minute F-Chat career,

My comment about taking it Silver was a last resort thing.

First a hello to all the new guys!!! Welcome to FChat!!! Hope you enjoy your stay!!!

Second, I think that IdidnotstealTonys348 is simply a poor choice for a user name. It can be changed - ask a Mod. I think its in poor taste and reflects poorly on you and therefore on the board.

I only meant that had it been in Silver, Tony348's VIN and all the other details of this
thread would not be searchable by Google. It's unfortunate on many levels that this
whole mess started in a public forum just for that reason. No judgement meant - just
containment of content from the prying eyes of Google.

I agree with you on one hand. But on the other, if someone stole my car, I would want the world looking for it.

I suspect he didn't expect it to turn out exactly as it did.

I've lightly followed this, and the thread in Owners, and kept kinda quiet on the subject so far, and will after this, for the most part.........

Those of you who have actually had a car stolen, raise your hands!!
Not many, I'll venture a guess.

A couple of notes from someone who has been through this:
    1) Tony kept the keys in the car, secured within his premises, inside a closed garage. Some here keep returning to this as if he had it parked on the curb, unlocked with the keys in the ignition.
BTDT - My first Porsche was stolen two days after our back garage was broken into, using the key taken from the car. We didn't know about the break-in (the side-door carefully wedged at the strike) until we started noticing a very few things missing after the car was stolen, when we were trying to figure out how they just took it from a parking lot in broad daylight, with security. I just figured that I had brought the key inside that last time, and misplaced it again for a day or two (usually in the laundry, in a pocket). Just used the spare key, again, without giving it a second thought.
Point is - they had to break-in to a secured area to get to it in the first place.

    2) When you realize that your car has just been stolen, especially if it's your "pride & joy", your mind does scramble a bit. More than you expect, and lots more than most people outside of your scrambled head can realize.....not to mention that classic Denial response, where you actually wonder if you really left it parked at ????? It's truly weird.

I'd have to side with Tony at this point, and like most of the regulars here, would like to see how this really turns out. Let's hear it out.

All very fair and reasoned points Kurt. At this point, it just has to play out and I truly
hope it to be in Tony's good favor. But from time immemorial, genies tend not to go back in bottles - it's all out "there" now.

Aw, now, Steve... there was a reason I posted that in Silver & not here - wish you hadn't had cross-quoted that. I didn't want it publicly-search-able, considering the activity this thread has gotten, and therefore didn't want it to be misinterpreted by anyone to be an actual "theory". I figured that in the context of a subscribed thread, with a smiley attached (which don't show up on Google searches, if I had posted that here), no one could misinterpret the fact that I was just being silly & making a joke.

I raise my hand. About 25 years ago my perfect 73 Alfa Spider was stolen from a Ralphs parking lot in a rather dubious neighborhood in LA. At first, I thought I just forgot where it was. But, it was pretty clear it was gone.

I contacted the police right away. They sent a car and filled out a report. They told me that if it doesn't show up in 3 days, it's probably gone for good. They gave me a number to call.

I contacted my insurance agent the next morning and gave him all the info.

I called each day for about a week. Then, on the 8th day (the same day the insurance was going to settle), they had found my car. It was in San Francisco.

I called my agent and he called the impound lot in SF. They said the car was drivable. My agent said if I wanted, they would fly me to SF to claim it and drive it back. I took the offer.

When I found it, it was in no way drivable. So, I found an Alfa mechanic and towed it over. He patched it up enough for me to drive to LA. That's were the rest of the repairs had taken place.

So, what I learned was this.

    1) The police really don't care about car theft. If you want your car back, you have to work for it and show interest. Don't expect them to do anything -- like look for it or try to find the guy who did it. They have bigger fish to fry.

    2) A car can be stolen from just about anywhere at anytime. Mine was a busy parking lot at 11 PM.

    3) Older cars are a lot easier to steal than newer cars. When I saw how easy they broke the lock and hot wired it, I was amazed I even bothered to lock it at all.

    4) Joyriders make no sense whatsoever. They are not in it for the money and will steal whatever they think they want or is available. And, they trash them when done. Pro car thieves however try to keep the car in one piece because every undamaged part is money. So, if you get your joyriden car back, expect a lot of damage.

    5) It's a devistating experience you don't want to wish on anyone who loves their car. If you don't love your car, then its just a hassle and maybe a little money.
