Do you think new FF owners will be given a cadre of 4 tall men with big black drapes to hold up around the car at all times in order to prevent heart attack rates spiraling out of control across the world?

 

You could PS a naked photo of Charlize Theron on to the hood of that "Thing", and it still wouldn't look "good".

Why FIAT thinks the Universe needs an even bigger, even heavier, albeit faster version of a BMW Z3 Coupe is fully beyond my understanding.

Yes, for 200 or so heirs apparent it will be a lovely ice breaker, but for the rest of us it is proof positive FIAT think they can just slap scudettos on a turd and to hell with tradition and honor.

I loved this car when it came out....yes yes...I know its weird...but I really loved it...especially when I drove it.

Only thing is will we love the FF?? Gonna wait and see it first.

If it's just the general shape that inspires you, you can compare with a quantity of cars with 2 doors and such rear ...but you're absolutly right : the BM is just a toy for kids (what ? your pic is not a toy ?)

But think about the concept behind the shooting-brake. Getting 4 humans into the 612 isn't that hard, and consider the luggage. The shooting-brake is a touchy design these days, as hatches are all over the place, but the E-Type showed us it can be done on a sexy level.

Shooting-brakes and grand-touring go hand in hand, so this shouldn't be too foreign of a concept.

 

It amazes me that you acualy know that figure for sure.

 

I am really disappointed by the FF. I thought Ferrari was back at making gorgeous cars after the 458 which didnt need justification or 2 years to be attractive to the eyes..but this and the California are just signs that Ferrari is more and more turning into a luxury car maker with performance. Of course the 2+2 V12 was never supposed to be a full out sportscar, but then i also never expected it to be a 4x4 2t+ ugly hatchback.

 

I just bought a used 612 and I have a 458 amongst other Fcars. 4 seat Ferrari is useful in daily life. It makes driving my kids to swimming lessons on a nice day a lot more fun for me and my kids

(She was driving a 250GTE when I met her, so I guess she is partial to 2+2 Ferraris... )

I may be one of the few here, but I like the FF very much.

 

But are by no means substitute goods.
A contemporary Ferrari 2+2 is a daily driver.

 

Like a few other people, I find the Z3 M coupe somewhat homely.

However, the gremlin and AMC pacer are also "classics" with a following.

Again, something I cease to understand. ;-)

And most people who can afford one can afford both.

They arent direct competitors for anyones dollar. Totally different purchases that provide equal value in different ways.

 

exactly... if i wanted a high speed car to get me from AZ to california and both cars were free... id take the FF...

it has A/C and should make the drive... the daytona... it could make it... if all goes well... and I don't mind being in a pool of sweat... and if it does break down... its going to be a problem....

 

I understand that but here's the confusing part. Are cars 1 & 3 substitute goods? If yes, why pay 6X more for Car 1 in this market segment? And where there is a higher substitution effect there are lower prices. So leaving the design out of it, why would Ferrari chase a market where many more alternatives exist?

They must have a new found ability with tooling and design to get in and out of a prototype and first run with minimal risk and expense. It's like they have the ability to be profitable on the 5th car on the assembly line. The Ferrari Dream (higher price point) + New Factory Machinery + Rapid Prototyping reduces the break even timeline from year two to car 6?

Where do you get your figures for profitability? Given the homologation costs for each new model plus the considerable PR price alone I can't see the break-even point being anywhere near that low. Or did I misunderstand (again ).
