Helmut felt it necessary to state publicly that the only reason that Webber came anywhere near Sebastian in the title race was the car's early season mechanical issues.
That may or may not be true but what possible use is it to take that sort of stuff public now?

Setting an expectation that Vettel will dominate the entire season? I agree it seems sort of a poor way to rhetorically begin the season.

Seems like Dr. M isn't the only one at RB who is out of touch with Webber. When C. Horner was asked for his reaction to Mark's new book he claimed he had no knowledge of its existence.
    Talk about a dysfunctional organization.

But there's no driver preference at Red Bull, right?

Well petty hard for Horner to know about it when Webber didn't tell anyone except hid physio. In Webber's defense it makes sense; in a Championship fight why expose any weaknesses?
Why is that considered a dysfunction organization?

Not just the injury. The book itself.
A lack of communication within any group is a sign of dysfunction .

Not saying something obvious and factually true so as to protect Webbers fragile ego would be showing a preference.

Just saying how it is, is not.

True or not is it any way to run a team?

I'd say it's Marko's way of telling Vettel that they really want to keep him.

End of the day it's up to Vettel though, if they keep providing him with a winning car....

I doubt that Seb needs reassuring. If they don't want Mark, kick him to the curb don't treat him like a step-child.

I still believe Mark should have won the DC. He was more consistent and mature throughout the season.

I too, wanted Webber to win the title.
Not because I think he was the faster at Red Bull, but because I could see that 2010 could be his last chance to clinch the title.

Mark Webber isn't top-draw as a driver in my book, but the guy is likeable and typical no-nonsense Australian, in the Brabham and Jones' mould.

Early in the season, he benefited from favourable circumstances and exploited them well. Then, the pressure got to him, and added to team politics, his focus went off.

I fear that he will never meet the same conditions again and will revert back to being a 2nd driver, in any team. He missed his chance ...

    +1

+1 To all of the above.

Mark has leveraged a pretty good career out of his debut 6th place Minardi finish in Adelaide (?).... Good luck to him, but I don't see a title in his future.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Of course it is...

We have to keep in mind these people aren't seeking out reporters to air their thoughts on issues - they are constantly asked and sometimes they answer.

Stating facts isn't favoritism; it would be favoritism, however, to misstate the facts to protect Webber. Webber can take it.

There are a lot of ways to win a marathon... you can go all out and have high high's and low low's, like Vettel and Hamilton (and Alonso).

Or you can be the "slow and steady wins the race" kind of guy.

If you look at the guys who go all out - Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso, Kimi, etc. They have one thing in common.

The slow-and-steady guys like Webber and Button don't win against the above types of guys. They only win when they have an even slower teammate (a-la Barrichello).

Aw shucks Mike yer just a bit tad disingenuous there.
Teams do, of course, seek out the press when they have something they want out there. Often its in the form of an unattributed source but this time it was accredited. Not only did they want ti out they wanted Mark to know from where.

Disingenuous? I don't think so. I don't think teams seek out the press other than when they have a specific agenda to push, and we all know this "anti Webber" agenda exists only in the minds of those who can't accept he just is inferior, as a racer, to Vettel. Red Bull certainly doesn't have any anti-Webber agenda, but they have been absolutely hounded by the press on this issue. If they didn't like Webber, he wouldn't be wearing a RBR uniform in 2011. That he is trumps every Internet theory of team strife.

Why on earth would they re-sign Mark and then "make sure he knows they all feel Vettel should have been further ahead except due to unreliability out of his control"? Wouldn't it just be easier not to re-hire Mark?

Occam's Razor... I have a simpler explanation. Someone asked Marko the question and he replied with the truth. Often, people see what they want to see, however. There are even some people who actually believe Massa moved over for Alonso out of the kindness of his own heart, and was never ordered to do so. :)
