Hey... it's not THEIR money at stake. A billion here a billion there.... who cares?
They'll just tax more next time they need it. Not to go all P&R on it... but GEEZ. What

Many years back I spoke to the crew of a nimrod at an airshow in Halifax, NS. A week later that same crew all lost their lives crashing into lake Ontario at the next venue on their tour. Never forget that one.

Edit- I wonder how many of our American brothers know about the Avro Arrow?

 

sorry, i closed the site i took that from...i'll try and find it again

not many people outside Canada to be sure, except those who are aviation/fighter enthusiasts......little do people know, most of the avro engineering staff went on to be leaders of the first lunar landing projects, and NASA space programs......the Arrow with iroquois engines, held & still does performance records that wouldn't be duplicated in a single aircraft for 20-30 years later.....IMO had avro continued on from that pace, then a F22 could have been produced even before the F40 arrived!

 

There is a great book all about it with some great pictures, can't remember the name but I read through a lot of it while sitting around at Woodward Aviation in St Johns, Newfoundland.

Regarding the Arrow, see if you can get this DVD. It is what we would call a docudrama about the aircraft, starring Dan Aykroyd as the head of Avro Canada. From everything that I've heard, it's a fairly faithful re-telling of the actual story (aside from a fanciful finale), and it's well done.

Unfortunately it was more airplane than you had engines to match. Mean looking mother. Nearly as much as our B-70 in money invested.

yes, was a CBC production that aired on Canadian TV some years back, the local library is a good (free) place to rent it also

 

if you mean the arrow, the first test flights were pratt&whitney engines in place until the avro designed iroquois engines came in
with those installed the arrow made it's unofficial records for speed and altitude (recorded), but being the then government take down was in full swing, things didn't go further

Funny how things change over a few thousand years...after reading this I wonder who wrote this urban dictionary. How I long for the Elizabethan years...


Nimrod

1. A mighty hunter. Now chiefly used in this sense outside the United States.
2. A slow-witted person.

Nimrod was the Biblical founder of Babylon, also considered a mighty hunter. Contrary to the uneducated twits on here, Nimrod did NOT build the tower of Babel (at least the Bible does not claim this, only that the "men of Babylon" tried to build it), and the Bible does NOT claim he tried to kill God.

The Bible ONLY mentions that Nimrod was a son of Cush, the founder of Babylon, and a mighty hunter. Curiously enough, Dictionary.com attests definition 2 to have derived from a Looney Toons episode, wherein Bugs Bunny mocks his adversary, the hunter Elmer Fudd, calling him a "poor little Nimrod". Warner Brothers' Looney Toons cartoons were not written for children, but for literate adults, and often contained literary references children would not understand. Younger generations, mostly illiterate, and having little or no Bible knowledge not gleaned from their moronic parents and half-wit talk radio hosts, probably misunderstood the comment as being a general insult describing the slow-witted Fudd.
Probably from the phrase “poor little Nimrod,” used by the cartoon character Bugs Bunny to mock the hapless hunter Elmer Fudd.

 

Just saw this.. I had no idea they were still building the Nimrod... in fact, I was surprised that any were still flying.

The Nimrod is a miltary adaptation of the old (very old) deHaviland Comet, which first flew in the late 1940's! The first commercial jetliner.

By the 50's, they were tumbling out of the sky - metal fatigue reared it's ugly head.

It took years to fix the problem, but by then the Boeing 707 was operational.

The Comets just stopped selling, only the British airlines ordered more than a few.


A military version (Nimrod) was develped in the mid 60's.

I can't believe they are (were) still building them. Why????
