I had a Black Series when it first came out. Very, Very good car - brutal. As close to a dedicated track car as Mercedes has come thus far. A bit heavy, but a whole lot of fun to drive.

You probably already know the 996GT2 is known as 'Widowmaker'.

I dont think any C63 would compare to that car. That car is an animal and very fast but a beautiful example.

I think that particular car sold already. If it were between those 2 cars however I'd have to go with the CLK63 black series, it's probably one of the sweetest cars I've ever seen in person. Black or white that car is nasty.

he's not talking about a C63, but a CLK63 Black Series. totally different cars.

anyway, to the OP. I think it depends largely on how you're going to use the car. road-only weekend car, I'd go with the Benz. If it were a dual use (road and track) or track-only car I'd go with the GT2.

Yes, road-only. I only track the race cars.

My sense is that the CLK63 is the way to go on this. But, when I see cars like this that are clearly lovingly-built and well-maintained, I have to give serious thought to them, and the GT2 has always been one of the cars I've thought very hard about. But, ultimately, wandered away from. The Black Series, in every respect, gets my blood pumping.

Thanks to all for the thoughts.

This begs the question, why did you get rid of it?

Tough decision though, both are really great cars. I'm not sure which I'd choose if I were in that position.

I'm just wanting a "fun" two-seater street car. I've now whittled it down by eliminating the GT2, so I've added back an SL63 to my deliberations. I still favor the CLK63, but the SL63 has the added benefit of the convertible top and more comfort (better for the ladies?). The CLK63 really is a bare-bones, neck-snapper. LOVE it, though. It just looks right. Well done, AMG.

I would never even consider a Mercedes in comparison to a GT2 996. Remember the GT2 was still built at Weissach (development centre of Porsche), the engine can be traced drectly to some of the most relable and successful engines Porsche ever built. It is bullet proof if cared well.
And it is the last generation of (Porsche) cars which are actually need to be driven (without all the electronic aids & helpers) and do not drive you.
History will tell - this is one of the real ultimate supercars from a very limited run at Porsche. In my oppinion no comparison to 997 GT (RS) - which is a marketing gadget only getting its pace from the leap in tire development of the last years.
So - get a good one as original as possible -a nd you will be fine for a long time if you drive it regulary.
By the way - how are they priced (and sell) in the US and where are the best places to finde them (ebay? dupontregistry, ....)???

I have seen them from $70k to $120k. I check ebay, Porsche dealer network, Dupont and a few exotic dealers.

I wouldnt mind one but then i would have to get a ****box for DD.

I had bought the car mainly for a toy for my wife - she wanted something she did not want to shift. She liked it but was a time in her life where she couldn't drive it much (we have 5 kids). We already had the Stradale which she like driving and I had the itch for something "vintage". I had the car for 2 years which is about as long as I have kept any of the toys. From time to time, I still have a little sellers remorse.

I'd go for the CLK63 Black Series over the SL63. It just seems more "special" and looks like a DTM racer that found its way off the track and onto the street. One thing the SL63 has as a strong plus is its MCT wet-clutch transmission. The torque converter auto is the least appealing part of the CLK63, IMHO. The rest of the car is just fantastic, especially the soundtrack from that V8.

You have one hard decision to make, don't envy you at all. Both the CLK63 and the SL63 have +'s and -'s. Either one would be great IMO...
