Thank you so much for posting that. I too was 15 when that first aired and only caught the end of it. I wanted to see it in its entirety. Unfortunately nobody I knew recorded it so I completely forgot about it. Thanks again.

 

It's pretty impressive to watch Balboni drive THAT fast on public roads.

somewhat insane to do 100-180 mph with the chance that some farmer will pull into the road doin 10 on a tractor

 

I'm not saying it's the safest way to get to work, but realistically it's very fun to watch.

Valentino Balboni test-driving Armin Johl's Countach S Series 1. 1978. Countach chassis number 1121012. Off Via Modena (actually way off it!).

The factory built Armin a new car (1121026).

Speeding on the public roads is dangerous, and Valentino has had an Angel perched on his shoulder all those years.

 

You should hear what he said when Balboni wanted to see him again years later. Morely is the classic pu**ey. I doubt Morley every raced anything. But that's OK. It's not for everyone. Still the best piece he ever did for 60 minutes. It perfectly captures the spirit of the exotic Italian car at that period in time. It WAS different back then. He also had the perfect surname for that segment.

dang, where does joe sacky come up with this info? I imagine Mr.Lamborghini would get fresh Countach models every few months

 

OK, I stand corrected. But I know Valentino scared him sh*tless. On public roads I don't blame him either.

 

SAFER DRIVING
Despite his love of Formula One car racing, 60 Minutes correspondent MORLEY SAFER's career as a racer wasn't prix-des-tined. Asked how he would spend a 60-minute fantasy, he says, "I'd be driving in the lead car in a Formula One race in the Italian Grand Prix and have a three-lap lead. I would have loved to have done that, but I'm getting a little old." Safer, 58, whose new book, Flashbacks, is about his return visit to Vietnam last year, says, "I didn't pursue racing because I was too busy trying to make a living in a different kind of sport, but I occasionally on weekends get out on a grand prix-style track—not an oval one—and drive. I have a Ferrari, which I only use to exercise my Walter Mitty fantasy, and can crank it up to about 125 mph."

That's not racing. I drive at a lot of tracks and own a race car but I'd never say I raced. I go to club events. Not even in the same universe. Maybe he got involved with SCCA and did some events?

 

Only Ferruccio's LP400S 1121164 which now belongs to a friend.
