I'll quote that to my shop and have him get to work!!! LOL! I agree.... I did feel bad when I turned out of a driveway and heard the rocker panel bottom out. They'll fix that too! I drive mine so hard, it's the paint job that gets replaced more often than the belts/tensioners!! You are right in that if the car has seen rust and moisture, the rockers will well show it!!! I have three North American steel cars...one 1976 and two 1977s....
aw, isn't this nice...maybe i'll come by on my way to the airport and rattle Rock's cage a bit...; ) have fun guys, can't think of a better way to blow a couple of hours. brett
Dumb question, but is that because it would have altered the surface finish, or another reason? I glass beaded the covers on my '85 last year before having them powdercoated ('textured' red). I know it's not an OEM finish, but this is by far not the only non-OEM thing about my car The freshly beaded bare aluminum looked stunning, but wouldn't have stayed that way long under the hood... Car looks great - will be following along! Image Unavailable, Please Login
work progresses on the gtb, I found a solid steel bar attached to the shifter rod??? It must have been installed in north america because two of the clamps were made in the usa, one clamp was a gift as it was a chenney which fits the early ferrari's. some of the interior, as you can see the roof frame is bare metal. Carpets are okay but a new complete set with factory heel pads and correct binding is on the shelf. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
^ is that rust all the way around in that pic with the daytona in it ? is that on the frame or is that rubber, i cant tell.
the surface rust is on the inside of the car covered by the interior panels. Thats why its important that these cars be kept in a heated garage and not parked in a car port covered with a tarp.
As we take the car apart we find some odd items, like a mice nest. The coolant hoses are original as are the serflex hose clamps. The hose clamps that have excessive corrosion will be disgarded, the others will be reconditioned. The last photo shows the heater core element, there use to be a thin foam filter but it has fallen apart. With out the foam filter sand will enter the interior when driving with the vents opened. must be nice to be a mouse and driving around in a ferrari - i wonder how many miles those mice rode in with past owners
Fave, the original hose clamps are no longer available so we recondition the good useable clamps. Is it worth it? some people are happy with those crappy trico hose clamps that dig into the rubber hose other like my self want the originals. It also matters when your car is being judged in a concourse.
Ah well that makes sense. I thought that OE ones were still available, that's why I asked. Can't wait to see it.
Speaking of madness, how is that 1974 Daytona coming along? Just a hint of that one in the first picture of post number 83 here. That driver's door looks nice; how about a pic from the rear of the car? I am sure it got lots of attention to! Thanks CH
Hello Ch yes the daytona in the photo is coming along well. It's actually a 73 and I'll post some photos of that one day. How have you been? Did cambridge get lots of snow?
the final stages of the interior removal, there is no point in keeping the wiring in the car. when the harness is out of the car it will be inspected and reconditioned. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey Rocco we got off easy, less than a foot of snow and it's another day closer to spring now. No complaints here! Hope that special Daytona will be painted silver again... CH
Charles, Niki Lauda daytona will be painted its original silver with black interior and lt grey rugs. The restoration is coming a long at a good pace, when your in Toronto fell free to stop in.
Damn that's an impressive restoration. I didn't read the whole thread, but is this for a customer or are you restoring this car to sell???
Yes, Rock is restoring it for me. However, neither he nor my wife know that yet so please keep it a secret. Keep up the great work Rock!
