Why is the scud exhaust so significantly louder than other performance cars. I know people who have rip tuned M3s that would blow the scud out of the water in a straight line and they have performance exhausts that are quite loud, but when those valves in the Scud open up it's a completely different level of loud. I know comparing a ferrari to BMW isn't the greatest of things to do, but I would expect performance for performance for the exhausts to be comparable. For comparison, I've heard a couple lamborghini lp560-4 exhaust in real life and although they sound beautiful they just don't seem to have that same magnitude as the Scud exhaust. Scud exhausts just seem to resonate where you can hear them 20 blocks away.
All part of that beautiful genre of owning one of the world's best supercars. It's not a loud noise but an orchestral noise to admire. Rob.
The Scud is a pretty much straight outlet when the valves open. Any M3 that will walk all over a Scud is absolutely going to be turbocharged, which quiets down the noise. An LP560 doesnt have as straight an exhaust either, but are still very loud.
So when the valves open up it's more or less a straight pipe? Yea the m3s I've seen were mostly supercharged, I mean don't get me wrong they were for sure loud but I feel like a Ferrari is on a completely different level of loud, even when compared to lamborghinis.
Two things help. First the BMW is front engined and the exhaust has a lot further to travel before exiting. Second, the BMW has a 90 deg V8 and the exhaust tract is compromised compared to the 180 deg V8 on the Ferrari, where the exhaust is optimized because of the two four cylinders on one crank configuration.
