To all you listers in Melbourne, I need your advice. A friend's son is living in Melbourne and lately has been suffering what sounds like serious mental depression, and, indeed, depression is in his family. He needs professional help ASAP, as this seems to be very serious. A good start should be an appropriate GP, but he does not have one. So if you can suggest a GP, could you please PM me ASAP.

    Many thanks for your help.

    Hi Grahame,

While I don't live in Melbourne, from experience, may I suggest that if the situation with your relative becomes desperate, then he should present at an emergency ward of a public hospital where he can be assessed immediately, as there is usually a mental health unit attached for such occasions. Upon doing so, he could be admitted, referred to a mental health practitioner for ongoing treatment, or transferred to a private mental health hospital.

    Hi j15,

This is good advice - many thanks. In this case, I think the trick is that he has not gone through the transition of acknowledging/accepting that he has the Black Dog and thus actively seeing intervention. I think this is where a GP can really help him at this stage. But in his case, he does not even have a GP. His dad is overseas and so is seeking my help to find a one for him. So if we can find an appropriate GP, the next steps might flow...

    Hey Grahame,

If he has trouble in recognising that he is sick, then it may be helpful for him to fill out a symptom checklist which can help a person understand if they are depressed. They have them on the beyond blue website: http://www.beyondblue.org.au/index.aspx?link_id=89.678

Thanks, everyone, for reading this and giving your suggestions, both on the forum here and via PM. It's very much appreciated and it enabled me to give my friend a number of very good suggestions and directions.

There's no better place than seeing a counsellor. I was going to recommend the organisation 'headspace'- they did a brilliant job when I was there. They'll do wonders :)

    Best wishes!
