It wasn't that long ago we passed the spotters thread and now we have almost a third more posts (4602 vs 3584). Closing in on Kirby's number of views (145,158 vs 169,529) then number of view on spotters thread (221,567). Kirby perhaps you need to be posting more of your amazing pictures.

I am not sure I will be able to make it this weekend. It looks like we are going to have gorgeous weather. Wishing everyone a great time if I cannot make it. (like that is going to be difficult! :) )

Here is a link to a video from just prior to our last drive. Shot by one of our South Bay guests. Thanks T. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=311352 The good stuff starts at about 45 seconds. Enjoy :) :)

I hope you have had your attorney draw up a contract and had your son sign off. Hopefully his professional sports career will provide you with a good annuity in your later years! Maybe some Saturday we should all do breakfast and drive to your son's game. Might be pretty cool for the kids to have a dozen ferraris show up. :)

The kid can play thats for sure! Wonder if they can sign a 13 year old.
No doubt the kid owes me whatever the newest Ferrari is when he does get signed!

SKUSA, not a bad idea having a FOG drive to a baseball game! Maybe in the spring.

I am unfortunately out for 4-6 weeks. After the last drive I was washing my car and I noticed that my 2 rear wheels had cracks in the spokes. I called the manufacturer of the aftermarket wheels and found out that they only make custom wheels. Forturnately, they can dismantle the 3 piece rims and custom fabricate new centers. So, my 360 is on jackstands, tires have been dismounted, and the wheels shipped off to Southern California. They say 4-6 weeks ( and $1500) to get the wheels back to me.....Bummer.

    Safe driving everyone,
    Doug

    ...Dr Doug:

Italiani say: This is a serious situation.

You are sending the same wheels; that failed in service, to the folks who designed and built them?

That is suspect , to me.

What design modifications are they making to address the early demise of the set you sent them?

Have they offered a reason why these failed? (relative to how long in service, OR an external cause..i.e., were you in an accident? Doesn't look like it.)

What will prevent a future failure? (If built to the same specs.?)

Are they going to increase the width of the machined spokes to better handle the load? Obviously there are HUGE forces on a wheel just going in a straight line, add a couple of Highway 1 turns and the forces are magnified, go a little faster into a turn and it's exponential.

Is there a need to manage the heat treating? (If any), or do hardness testing after the fact to insure QC standards are met?

IF these are forged wheels as advertised in the center badge...there is some serious metallurgical problem. I see cracks at the stress points in the spokes above the radius. Not good. And you have to pay for this service? Me no likey. From here: Looks like a warranty deal to me.

It sounds like the new components will be machined 'billet' style...? Correct? That is very different from forging, that wheel manufacturing technique can generally tolerate thinner spokes because the metal is actually 'compressed ' together from many tonnes of force, literally pushing the molecules closer together, making it stronger. (Think Samurai sword, hammering metal on top of itself many times). Billet offers no such strength enhancement and I would expect the spoke width to change larger if they are taking a block of aluminum and making the new centers (as I read into this).

pm me if you wish to discuss this further.

    DrDoug,

Looks to me like the sound from SKUSA's Capristo F355 caused too much resonant frequency for those rims to handle when you pulled up next to him in that tunnel.
Seriously, though, hope to see you on the road soon.

    Hi Italiani and Need4Speed,

Thanks for your input and ideas. I will speak with the person I have been working with at
I-Forged Performance Alloys regarding some of the things mentioned. Unfortunately, since I purchased the car last year with these wheels, I have no idea how long they have been on the car. I suspect the previous owner tracked the car and I am sure that probably wasn't easy on the wheels. I did consider just buying new wheels and tires but I just put the 2 new P-Zeros on the rears a few months back and they are 355/19/25s. I think my best bet is to see if they can fabricate the new centers slightly thicker to improve strength. I will also ask about the manufacturing technique used.

    Thanks,
    Doug

...end of the earth. No one got hurt.

However, even wheels tracked or raced shouldn't fail like that.

Things are usually built to withstand 125 or 150% of the MAXIMUM load they would ever see before failing. Like Lauda at the Nurburgring on two wheels max load.

    Best of luck.
