    My wife and I will be touring GA, SC and east TN for a few weeks starting April 22nd. Any recommendations on car museums or events? Right now our plan is Atlanta - Savannah - Charleston - Myrtle Beach - Florence - Spartanburg - Gatlinburg and back to Atlanta.
    Thanks

    Jon...I may suggest if traveling thru NC, stop by the Biltmore House in Asheville. While in SC swing by Hilton Head Island a beautiful stop and go to Sea Pines Plantation. Also in SC stop by Kiawah Island and stay at the Santurary hotel. And Greenville SC is charming. There is nothing like the south. Have fun....by the way...great bar b q.

    I'm in Spartanburg, I'd be happy to take to a lovely dinner at my club if you want to see "Old South":

    BTW, if you choose to overnight in Spartanburg, consider the Inn on Main, a lovely, fairly priced (check the rates, you'll laugh) Inn owned, and next to, my dinner club;

    BTW2: the BMW plant is 16 miles away and a great, quick tour.

    You should visit Charleston for the charm and a view into the past of the South. In Spartanburg visit the BMW factory Zentrum http://www.bmwusfactory.com/zentrum/.
    Do plan to visit the Biltmore House in Asheville, Largest private home in America. Take up Uro on his offer of dinner. The Piedmont Club is wonderful.

    We travel to Charleston quite a bit for weekend get-a-ways. We stay at the Charleston Place hotel. Very nice, great good (breakfast at the Palmetto Cafe) and usually some nice cars parked out front around the fountain. Be sure to do a carriage ride (http://www.classiccarriage.com) (do it first thing in the morning to get the 'lay of the land', then you can travel on foot to check out some historic houses.

    I totally agree with spaghetti, The Biltmore is a must see! Stay at the Grove Park Inn. Plan a whole day for The Biltmore.

    When we go to the beach, we usually stay in Surfside. It's just south of Myrtle Beach, so you're out of the crowds, but close enough if you want to be in the middle of it all. There's only one hotel (Holiday Inn) there (everything else is residential). This means less crowded beaches.

    Once you go to Myrtle Beach--then Gatlinburg, you'll find that Gatlinburg is like Myrtle Beach (without sand and water). My wife is from middle TN and I asked her where to stay and what to do in that area. She suggested renting a cabin for accommodations. I'd suggest taking a drive on some of those winding roads! (We haven't had the Fcar up that way yet, but did take the BMW....loads of fun!). Tale of the Dragon is around that area, too. Google it and see what you think.

    Whatever you end up doing, you'll have a blast and certainly enjoy the Southern Hospitality.

    Travel safe!!!

    Myrtle Beach has some alright strip clubs. I'm in Florence and there is only one place that is decent to eat at. Percy and Willies.

    tour the biltmore and you can stay on the grounds at the inn there or you can stay at grove park. either way is a win.

    Thank you to everyone who contributed with a post or a PM. Your advice has been most helpful and has casued me to make some changes in our itinerary (sorry Myrtle Beach . . . OK, we're still going but for less time!). As to "southern hospitality", all I can say is that my wife and I really enjoy traveling in the south. There truly is something special. Although this is our first trip to GA and mine to SC, we've been to FL a number of times and took a great driving trip, five years ago, through LA, MS, TN and AB. Having been to Europe (Italy x 3, UK x 1) the last four years, it was time to get to the southeast.

    Sadly, Garibaldi's closed their Market Street location last year but they are looking to reopen in a new facility this year.
