it was suggested i post this thread here also, i started on in the off-topic section

anyone know New Orleans OCHSNER Medical Clinic?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

anyone have experience directly with this clinic?

specifically i want to know about thier practise, first hand feed back.....we've been lloking also at the mayo clinic, the rochester location, but NOLA would be a preferable location

    http://www.ochsner.org/international/health_services/

specifically i am looking for first hand experiences feedback, more specifically pertaining to infection treatment ability by them (see below)

    in brief...

my loved-one is battling a body-wide infection, anti-biotic resistant....originating from a 12 year old dental surgery (wisdom teeth), that has erroded the jaw, and resulting hidden infection has been root-cause of reoccuring lung (pneumonia) and now blood infection.....

the canadian medial system is a joke, unless standard treatments fix the problem! ...and no dentist (the original surgeon won't return calls) will touch her with the infection, doctor throws hands in air because general anti-biotics didn't fix it....errrr!

...this has been going on 10 years now, original 2 years of dental exams was "told" good healing and no infection....and only in last year have we discovered this being the source....problem is this is preventing treatment of yet untreated gynocological issues

any help or feedback on this clinic would be great, thanks

PS anyone who does not want to post publicly, can PM me too, thx

I don't have any personal experience with them but wish you only the best in getting the medical expertise you need. My thoughts and well wishes...

Sounds like she may have Osteonecrosis...Its not really a infection, but acts like it sort of....Very hard to treat...its rare for a dental extraction to all of a sudden, after 2 years to become infected and last that long....Of course, without seeing her, Its only a guess from the limited history.....Get her to a Oral Surgeon and get a proper Diagnosis if you can...

Osteonecrosis can happen in women, when they don't heal properly and the bone stays exposed...if you try to go in there to cover it with a graft, it just gets Worse!! which is why no one wants to touch her...its not really a Doctors fault, its her immune system and why it won't heal like it should....but lawyers like sue doctors, so thats why most doctors won't try anything that they can't be sure it will work....I had a couple of patients that came to me from other offices that had this and I referred them to a Oral Surgeon, who referred one to a Specialist Oral Surgeon that just deals with Osteonecrosis....she was helped, but it took about 2 years to heal and god forbid if she has to pull another tooth!!!

Seems like there would be somewhere closer to Canada than New Orleans?

    thanks for the advise Mark,

i'm not 100% sure that specific term has come up, i will check our notes.......if you have any specific names or contacts i could inquire with, that would be most appreciated...feel free to PM the info if you prefer then posting it here.....thank you

i hadn't intended this to be a 'sad-story' thread....we are so far along this cycle of failure to diagnose and treatment, that locating the "right" treatment outside of province and canada appears to be our only option.....so why i am investigating these

the years have passed due in largest part to the the ridiculous system here, and slow progression of issues, but without treatment.......out of the last bunch of specialists and regular GP (who just retired), each has fallen to the way-side for various reasons, so right now we are back to square one, finding yet another GP that will take seriously, and of course "yet" another referal to specialists = round and round...errr!

the oral surgeon recommended in whole province (and neighboring provinces actually), was the one who did the original work....despite simple inquiry for her to have an appointment, his office has failed to return calls, of schedule an appointment (frustrating)....no other in the entire province (i've been calling every one) will advise her, and refer to see him.......so is a circle of frustration

    * so it seems a possiblity that the initial dental surgery was the catalyst for the osteonecrosis to have begun?

    * given the other infection symptoms (sinus, etc.) might it be possible (considering the complexity of this case) that both exist?.....this may also be reason of masking the whole diagnosis inclusion of osteonecrosis?

initial symptoms began with jaw-joint pain (consistently told was TMJ over years past), to the point now that her teeth have been becoming brittle, and literally breaking off in splinters........we do know there is infection there, the GP reports being able to see into the jaw through the exposed opening of the gums at the surgery locations, like they picture here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteonecrosis_of_the_jaw

it's been my belief that the infection has been festering for a long period, the symptoms of reoccuring pnemonia (tested showed being of viral and bacterial, but non-responsive to any anti-biotic courses) started as periodic (clearing on it's own), then became an annual occurence, then persistant, as the years have passed.....it is my belief that this has been the fuel for the pnemonia, and reason for it's reoccurence.......until the x-ray revealed it, each dental referal told her the jaw pain it was no more then TMJ, and not covered under health care, so no further action they would take

she has long been of healthy life style and great oral care taken....and our connection came when a x-ray of her jaw (normally not included in the dental x-rays) shows the bright areas of the hollowed region directly under there, and also she does have ongoing infection symptoms and issues.....we literally walked the x-ray from the dental office to the GP, to point it out....the infection has spread into the sinuses, and were told blood stream.....to my surprise and our aid, natural remedies have been her life saver, and her immune system can't be totally wiped out, because it keeps trying to fight back, it's just over-loaded

i've been in contact with the mayo clinic, the rochestor location they recommend as preference for the infection treatment, but of course before she can even travel, the immediate symptoms must be treated (she literally can not travel in her current physical condition) and the GP had warned that sinus infection could result in rupture or aneurysm if she flies.........but no one here does the body/blood-matched-anti-biotic treatment, like mayo has proposed, it appears to simply not be available here as a treatment option?!

the reason i enquire about this particular NOLA clinic, is from some online info i found re: dental and medical treatment, which if we could have done within one place, would be the ideal......also we have long intended to relocate to NOLA, so for inclusion of her emotional/psycological health, getting treatment there would also be of huge advantage, because if she has to travel somewhere anyways, better LA / NOLA!

    thanks again

thank you John....i didn't intend this to be a hard-luck thread, but it made sense if i could use to gather some first hand local information from a distance, for advantage to use for my current researching needs.....regards

I like my Ochsner doctor, but I know nothing about the type of treatment you're asking about. I've heard people say good and bad about Ochsner. Guess it depends on who you ask.

is that the NOLA location you visit? i'm really just gathering insight, not to be judgemental of them......i have inquiries to there, and some information from them has been sent apparently, in regards to specific treatment abilities and diagnostic.....the diagnostic will be first of course.......first hand experience with thier operations is invaluable, so please share more if you don't mind
    thanks

I think Ochsner is far away the best in our area. I am referencing the Jefferson main campus. Doctors are top notch and they are very responsive to patient needs. I cannot comment to your specific needs, but dealing with my fathers cancer, my nephews chronic ilness, and a friends battle with another previously undiagnossed illness, they have done a great job and both of my kids were born there.

    interesting, thanks Chris

i think with most places, there is good and bad.....even the mayo clinic has many complaints found online!

were these recently treated, your relatives?

    thanks again

I go to the one on Jefferson Highway, the original one. My parents go there too. My dad just had his knee replaced at Ochsner.
