Hi All I am running a Capristo Stage 2 exhaust together with Tubi manifolds and Capristo test pipes on my 1995 355 GTS. I have not owned the car since new so I do not know what the stock exhaust and cats sounded like, but I am aware of (and sometimes maybe a bit uncomfortable with) how loud my car runs, especially at idle and under 50 km/h (30 mph). I have even had people come up to me after I have parked my car and ask me if there was a hole in my exhaust system. I have obviously spent a fair amount of time, effort and money buying these extras for the car, but I really would like to quieten it down a bit, especially at lower speeds and at idle. Above 100kph the car sounds great - like an animal - but down low and for general suburban driving it is so rumbly and so loud that it has to some degree been putting me off driving it. My question is - would changing the test pipes out for cats make a significant difference to the sound in terms of softening / quieting it down at idle and at lower speeds? If so, which cats would you guys recommend as the best to buy? And are there any other parts I could also buy to try to reduce the rumble / volume in this regard? Thanks for your input. Wes
I'll swap you my Stage 1 for your Stage 2. Yes, cats will help muffle the sound noticeably. I would go with Hyperflow cats. Ignore what people say about aftermarket cats making the car throw codes...it's not the cats, that's just non-sense. In this case, get yourself the SRI Gold Connector Kit and the car will stop throwing codes.
Yes swap your system with Sandy eggo, that sounds like a good idea. Level one will be quiter. And you can go further with a set of cats, standard ones are easy and cheep enough to get hold of.
Yes I think it's way too loud. I think you should just sell it to me since Rick's stage 1 will probably be too loud as well
I have a 1995 that was outfitted with a Race Tubi, test pipes and no bypass valve .....and yes the car was stupid loud. I installed the bypass valve and Hyperflow cats and the sound is strong but not offensive. The car idles at a reasonable level and unless you go w.o.t. the car remains civil at virtually all speeds. At w.o.t.....the classic f1 howl. I can never understand why adults with high end high perfomance machines want to make their cars sound like an old clunker with a broken muffler (never got past 16?)......that offends all (like the Harley guys with the open pipes who blow your ear drums out......true a.. h...)
Keep your Capristo 2 and just swap out those test pipes with Hyperflows or sometype of high performance cats. You already have a by-pass valve...just make sure it's working properly...it should open at around 4Krpm with a good stab of throttle pedal. You really should be able to tell when the valve opens and closes. Cappy 2 with Hyperflow is what I have on my car....and I couldn't be happier with the setup. IIRC, all Captristos (level 1, 2 and 3) all sound the same level of loudness when the by-pass valve opens (essentially the same as having a test/straight pipe). The difference in different level is noticeable mostly at idle (with valve closed). So having cats installed (replacing your test pipes) will quiet things down some what.
Wow - this was my first post on FChat and such amazing and quick responses. Really feel like one of the Rossa Brothers hehe. I had forgotten to mention that I also had the Capristo bypass valve installed at the same time as the Tubi manifolds were done. I assume it's working correctly, but I wouldn't be able to be sure because I don't have any cars to compare it to. From the comments so far, it seems like getting the Hyperflow cats and putting them in place of the Cappy test pipes will be a good idea and will hopefully tame the beast when I turn her on (trying to make a more subtle arrival/departure from a restaurant has become very hard to do with the car sounding the way it is now - in a way it's nice but as others have alluded to it can be offensive I think to have it so loud and rumbly when you're just wanting to cruise along slowly past the shops/restaurants.) Thanks for the comments so far, and please keep them coming
I have a completely stock F355 with the factory exhaust. I tried test pipes and found even just them too loud, went back to the cats and found the quiteness to be enjoyable.
I feel like I have no business posting here, but I had the chance to drive a 355 with a tubi and the sound was more than perfect. No question the bypass valve was opening. It went from sounding like our Mondial t on steroids to a Ferrari F1 at the instant it opened. Don't know if the car had cats but you could talk at half throttle and below. WOT, however, was seriously loud and at the same time my wife was busy screaming for joy! dave
This is what I would do. I have not found cats to make that big a difference. I have test pipes and a Stage 1, and it is much quieter than the stage 2 at low speeds and rpms. My wife will travel with me, that should say something. At full tilt, it howls; as has been said, they are all the same wide open. I think you will get much more satisfaction from changing the muffler on the low speed air path. My sincere sympathies
Why? The 355 has the loudest stock exhaust of any ferrari. When they originally brought the car out the f dealer was installing tubi exhausts on their customer cars but it turned out that the base tubi was no louder than the factory muffler so they swapped the base tubi's out (due to customer complaints) for a race tubi and this solved the dilema. The point being that the stock 355 exhaust is plenty loud and I have driven both with the stock and the race tubi and enjoy both.
<sigh> I am just trying to be funny. I thought it was funny. Nobody gets me. That would be inflammation of your tintin? That's supposed to be a joke too (it's tinnitus, but I know what you mean, and you have a very valid point...)
No, i thought it funny and i got it Some times things can be hard work around here, as you might well know
It seems that a standard exhaust set up on a 355 is such a rare commodity that it has to be delt with under cloak and dagger How goes it Neil? Still not changed to Capristo yet brother, i woulnt bother mate. Seems standard is a rare beast
Standard, Its the future mate !!! lol I didnt want to post it up and make you jealous or have J.Salmon feel sorry for me I believe we will be meeting up in the summer to film standard, Capristo and Tubi......
