Anyone ever read the whole blog on "Wrong way around the world on a hardtail" Guy went all over on a '62 harley panhead , was funny on the boat to Japan where his bike merely had a small leak (like any old harley didn't?) and the 2 BMW's were both broke ! Excellent read ! With awesome pics.

Get a 1200 RT. Buy a low mileage used one and use the extra cash for a sport bike or the freight to ship it home after a long ride.

    LOL

Hey, thanks for all the ideas. Just as an update, Here's more on what I'm thinking about:

    1. Like George Thorogood once sang, "When I drink alone, I prefer to drink by myself." This means I do don't groups; at least, not on a motorcycle. This also means no two up. Jus me and some "Sergio Leone" music.

    2. Most likely path: Leave Houston headed for Trinidad, Colorado. (My father was from there.) Roughly over 800 miles. Because I fall asleep on superslabs, I have to drive on the back roads. Yeah, I know they are more dangerous, but watcha gonna do? Figure 3 to 4 days in the Summer.

    3. Once in the mountains, like Lorena the whore in Lonesome Dove, I believe it is bad luck to go backwards. So figure 4 to 5 weeks of meandering around. Some days might do over 200 miles. Some days might do nuthin at all.

    4. Eventually, there comes a jumping off point. Do I keep going north, knowing a hard wind is gonna blow? Or do I complete the circle of life and head back home to Simba?

    5. But when it comes to being Southbound and Down, you better get out of my way you small-town clown because this train is bound for glory.

Oh, and one mo thang. I like to go places where the GPS doesn't work. Places that don't show up on the map. Have you ever seen ball lightening? Well, I have. I was way up in the Colorado high plateau on some excuse for a highway. One of the damndest things I have ever seen. You could smell the ozone.

Needless to day, whatever motorcycle I'm on needs to start up in the am. I have adjusted all the points with cigarette papers I'm ever gonna adjust. Yep, I've paid my dues, and I'm ready to sing da blues.

Oh, and I found this really cool website:

    http://cycle-ergo.com/

I dunno how accurate it is. But, first impression is that no matter how beautiful they might be, a duc is out of the question. (Damn!)

Tell me more. I wasn't aware of this

Very cool. My problem is I sometimes have a hard time remembering which side goes up. It is the rubber or the shiny side. Or, is it supposed to do down? :)

Stop looking. The BMW R1200 gs is without doubt the best all around motorcycle for your needs. I have riden and owned many great bikes including harleys, triumphs and BMW. The gs, my current ride does it all good. I am 6th 2. 190 lbs. I ride with a calsci brand windshield and winglets. The combination is amazing with little or no wind. I can ride it all winter. For touring there is no equal. 525 lbs. With the side cases and the top case my wife fells like she is on a thrown so comfortable she has fallen asleep. ABS, traction control and adjustable suspension on the fly are great to have. The rear end thing is bs. Take care of the bike and it will love you. 6000 miles between service. I highly recommend.

Want something more rare than your Ferrari and good with being dropped out of a helicopter at more than 50 feet and be serviciable by rotax dealer's ? ( Might want to mothball factory parts and go with ron wood high performance part's) Yet be extremely durable and user friendly , as long as you have no super speed need's , then check out my 525 mile Harley MT 500 , where supposedly there are only between 300 & 2000 produced in 1999 . I really wish HD would spill thier guts on how many were made !! I have #48 that year.

I think that Beemer is worth a look. If he has maintenance records you are good. My uncles had near 200k on it.

I have to second all the above, lots of options mentioned but they are still a bit all over the map. The 1800 GoldWing is a brilliant machine. Weight is no excuse if you were considering Valkyrie, which weighs about the same. It is extremely well balanced, with superb handling that surprised the dickens out of me in the Utah canyons, and good weather protection.

From combined personal and shop experience, I would not consider Concourse, HD, and, as much as I love them, any modern Guzzi.

I'm impartial to sport-tourers (I'd love an adventure tourer but my inseam is way too short for most of them, I'm afraid). There were some good choices mentioned, including ST1300, FJR 1300, even Multistrada (brilliant dual-spark motor, same as in my Hypermotard, but why oh why did they have to make the previous model so ugly - the new one looks good, though!)

At the end of the day, you just have to go and sit on a bunch of them and see which one feels better. Buy a mildly used one from a local dealer if you can, establish a good service relationship with them, it will go a long way. British USA is good people. At the end of the day, pretty much every "difficult" bike in the city finds its way to Metric one way or another, we'll be always glad to help, but I'd think your goal for now should be not to buy a "difficult" one :D

Oh, and if you haven't already, post your question on http://twtex.com/, lots of local Texas guys who do touring and adventure rides, www.advrider.com is a great resource too as mentioned earlier.

Come by and see it, Dale....

In addition to the bar riser brackets, for revised driver posture, it has 20mm extended wheelbase, and a revised steering head angle.

It's the "Fat Boy" of Ducatis!!! LOL!

Not quite, we do service and repair on all metric bikes (hence the shop's name, Metric), European and Japanese. I know I'm biased seeing how I married him after I brought him my race bike to work on, but there is no other mechanic in the city who could equal Andy in his diagnostic, tuning and repair skills, so for years quite a number of dealers and shops have been sending bikes that 'couldn't be fixed' to him. But our general marketing strategy is quite simple.. once people find Metric (as many inevitably do), 98% of them never leave LOL Hopefully the good Doc never has to.. :D

Can someone look up for me or point me in the right direction to determine retail on this motorcycle?

I'm going to take a look at this bike on Friday. But I have been out of the loop for so long I don't have any resources for determining book.

    Thx, Dale

The Texas DOT Title office can tell you, in the absence of a Bill of Sale, they look up NADA and charge sales tax based upon that...

Might be able to source it via the web....

Thanks so much! I learned long ago that KBB & NADA are worthless.
