Daytona baby! Yeah, I admit it; I'm a NASCAR fan.

Good Bud Shootout last night; qualifying on now.

Amazing that it's been 10 years since Dale Sr.'s accident.

Glad to see the season start without the wings and spoilers.

it's funny, I really look forward to the Daytona 500 (I'm watching qualifying as I type this), but I don't really follow the season very intensely too much after that. but, I'm still a fan.

looks like the changes to the cars (wings and splitters) will make for an interesting race on the plate tracks.

hopefully we'll see better racing and fewer manufactured finishes throughout the rest of the season this year.

Hope you've got a healthy lung capacity Guy as you're going
to have to hold your breath a l-o-n-g time before NASCAR
relinquishes it's heavy hand of race control nonsense.

That's my feeling as well. The Daytona 500 is just too important to ignore.

But that Bud Shootout was the weirdest race that I think that I've ever seen. All those cars going around in pairs like they were welded together -- it reminded me a bit of Noah's ark! :D

Hello, the speeds were intense when paired up at laps of 206mph, yet quailifing was high at 184mph. The big race will be interesting.

Anybody here interested in forming or joining a Yahoo! nascar racing league?

You pick one driver from the 'A' list, two from the 'B' list, and one from the 'C' list, and you get qualifying points and race points.

If there is an interest in a league, I will form it, I am already in a few 'public' leagues, it takes nothing to form a private group/league.

I hope so. I'd be ecstatic if we could get 8 of us.

That's all I do is free stuff. In motorsports anyway.

I set it up to drop your lowest scoring week at the end of the season.
I didn't want to associate lowly nascar with Ferrari Chat.

I have always enjoyed going to the Daytona 500. Was there 10 years ago, will never forget losing Dale Sr. Also the July race. Since COT, haven't followed most of the season. This year may be different.

NASCAR reacted immediately to the new double car draft racing from last weekend. Smaller grill openings, probably smaller plates. 206 is just too fast, and the double car draft would make the race boring.

NASCAR has always been the leader among all forms of racing in reacting to make the racing more competitive for the fans. Did not like COT, but this new version is much better. It is the right approach, along with their no nonsense attitude when rules are broken.

Too bad F1 takes so long to react. Although F1's problem is mostly badly designed circuits than a lack of innovation. This movable wing plan may not work on tracks with short straights. But it is something.

IIRC, the 200 mph limit is still an insurance underwriting requirement. no doubt Carl Edwards putting it in the catch fence at 'Dega in '09 didn't help.

I do applaud NASCAR for making changes to the COT car-losing the wing, changing the front splitter, etc. those early COT races were awful. of course, bad races are bad for business, so it's not like they're being altruistic ;)

    How about 'ScudaBubba' ? LOL

Please explain to me the difference between a crash at 206 and one at 196, or even 186.
    You can't.

Like you, I am not crazy about the COT, and I'm not crazy about the cars, period, I'm an old-time purist, I want to see REAL cars identical to what you drive off the showroom, with real bumpers, etc. but we will never see that.

F1 is NO different than nascar, it is run by a dictatorship driven by TV revenue, but tell me a mainstream sport that isn't. When it comes down to it, the only difference between F1 and nascar are the fenders (or not), and the venues. In fact, F1 is worse because every year there are basically SIX drivers capable of winning a race - when is the last time YOU picked a winner NOT from Ferrari, Red Bull or McLaren? You probably didn't in 2010.
In nascar, you at least have a shot with TWENTY or more drivers every week.
It's a crapshoot, which is what makes this contest fun.

The only reason I started a league was for 'something to do'.

Wow, I didn't realize that locked-in front row guys had to even participate in the Duel (the accident occurred during Duel practice). What sense does that make? Congrats dude, you won pole now you get to risk the car (and pole) for zero gain. He can get the pole back but he has to win the first race tomorrow...in a backup car.

Maybe the fix is in...for the TV ratings...b/c I bet a bunch more 88 fans will be watching the Duel now.

this happened in practice (for the duel), not the race itself.

front row guys (who are locked in) in the past have started the duel, dropped to the inside on the back stretch, and withdrew from the race. there is no penalty other than "lost" prize money.

I bet Jr. wishes he had done that now :(

Yeah, know it was in practice; sorry if wasn't clear in my post.

I assume they participated in practice to get more time on the new surface and with the rule changes for the 500 setup. Otherwise, no benefit to "practice" for the Duel.

Guess I haven't paid much attention to the past Duels. It will be interesting to see what Gordon does tomorrow.
