    Took this yesterday off the coast of Japan, heading from Tokyo to Los Angeles in a B-747-400. It was a bit bumpy, so we couldn't push the mach anymore. Fastest for me so far this year.

    Mach .89
    TAS 535
    GS 726

    About 835 Mph.

    Last year I got 752 kts with a 213 kt tailwind....

    As the view is different to a Pilot than for a passenger looking out to side, from a strictly visual standpoint - How would you describe being at that speed to a *Layman?

    [Not a Rob Layman, the "normal" kind]

    Honestly, you probably wouldn't notice it at all. We are over the ocean, so not much of a visual reference. Also, the clouds closest to you are also in the wind, so no real difference from a normal flight.

    We are cruising faster than normal though. We normally cruise around Mach .84... (485 kts). In the 747-400, as you approach about .90, mach buffet starts. The airplane shakes a little as the airflow is supersonic around parts of the wing. Not much of a shake, but noticeable.....

    Lou- Impressive. We usually were transonic at about mach 0.92 in fighters and the autopilot would not work too well and airspeed indicator and altimeter would start bouncing a bit. But our surfaces and leading edges were a lot smaller. One of the reasons some stores carried a mach 0.90 limit.

    That is a lot of aluminum moving at that speed.

    You have no idea how this pleases me. Now I have proof that I can throw back at a few wise asses that pooh pooh the performance of the 747 and its " old technology". Thanks for posting!

    I was on a 747 once on a flight like that, New York to London on British Airways in 1990. The ride was lumpy the whole way, sort of like a car on a cobblestone road. We arrived over London an hour early, only to have to hold for nearly 40 minutes, because they weren't ready for us at Heathrow! The captain attributed our early arrival to a very strong tailwind.

    I remember travelling on the old AMS-SIN route on a 744 combi, it had a display in the cabin (no IFE) displaying the airspeed in kph, it got to about 980kph and I was so stunned I kept shouting at it in my mind to hit 1000!

    Not sure how accurate it was.... but I was just a kid :)

    I think that's awesome! I've seen 600+ in the Falcon 10, but never anything like that.

    While trying to wend my way through the Cascades in the old L-3 I encountered a bit of a headwind and the on-board computer, a vaunted E6B, showed a ground speed of just under 40 MPH. I didn't figure what the Mach number was.

    I used to go up with students when the winds aloft were really strong and have them configure for the "slow flight" maneuver and if you turned directly into the wind (probably 55-60 kts worth at 5000 feet or so) you could actually go backwards over the ground. It's kind of a weird sensation.

    Yep, unless you are in an SR-71 a 200kt head wind is not a lot of fun.

    Not much slower than the C-130 with no wind, I'm guessing?
