"Of all the defunct car companies, De Tomaso holds a special place in my heart for its often strange combination of American muscle and often strange but always glorious Italian styling (see Pantera and Mangusta). Someone must have stolen my dream journal, because they're bringing it back as a CROSSOVER!

"A crossover?" you ask, "Who in their right mind would take a name associated with hairy-chested sports cars and put it on a manscaped CUV?" The answer to your completely ridiculous question is Gian Mario Rossignolo, who formerly headed up Fiat marketing before purchasing the brand. And what's his plan for De Tomaso?

According to Automotive News, the new vehicle is a premium four-wheel-drive crossover called the SLC designed to compete with the BMW 5-series GT and Lexus RX, as opposed to the Ferraris and Lamborghinis the company used to compete with. Engine choices include a 550-hp V8, 300-hp V6, and 250-hp diesel V6 — all of unknown origin and all to be dropped into these aluminum-heavy "Sport Luxury Cars" at a former Pininfarina plant near Turin.

f things go well he'll use the money from the selling of his soul and the brand's heritage to build a sedan and eventually a coupe. Oh happy days. Oh happy days."

    -Matt Hardigree, Jalopnik

I never knew competition with the 5-Series GT was even competitive.
    Didn't see this coming....

This could get interesting. But as a Pantera owner I can tell you it's a bit disappointing to see DeTomaso reborn in the form of a likely-overpriced crossover.

So you want to come back to the market, but the market is flooded with high end sports cars that don't sell well. Do you make it anyway and flop or take the route the new DT company did and produce a car that they have a shot at making a profit with? Maybe they should have had both.

The piece of the equation that's missing is Ford.

Your point is well taken, but does the world really need another expensive crossover?

The name "DeTomaso" has a niche appeal to a relatively small number of consumers. Your average well heeled soccer mom is more likely to go with the more familiar Porsche, BMW or Audi.

Like I said... it'll be interesting to watch.

With the market shrinking due to the economy it's nice to have a new contender. I don't understand why they changed the logo though? I wonder why they used the DT name to market with ? Is it strong in europe?

Yes, under Ademir Oliveira in NJ. Was awarded my blue belt by Hermes Franca (which was cool), then subsequently ruptured my bicep tendon. Been on the sidelines since September (I was training for the Pan Ams), can't return until April, and I am antsy to get back.

So all we have is someone owning the De Tomaso name, his plans, and a CGI picture of what the car may look like, but nothing at all of substance. Correct?

Correct, this project is reliant on substantial financial support from the Italian Govt. which is not forthcoming, and looking increasingly unlikely to ever be!

I grew up with De Tomaso, my father was a Pantera owner, and I would love to see a sports car under their name in the future. As for a crossover, it could be interesting to see where this goes.
