If you recall he wasn't an enemy of the King and Sheriff until the last act of the movie, and wasn't "Robin of the Hood" until the last five minutes, it seems they could easily have a couple more movies.

The movie was basically about how he became Robin Hood. There can easily be a sequel.
It was a good movie up to the ending when they are on the beach. Then they tried to get every action/adventure movie cliche in the movie.

I think you missed the point of the movie :D

It embraced all the things you list above. It was intended as an homage to bad 70s Z-budget exploitation movies and all the cheesiness that came with them. Nothing about it was intended to be believable.

Read this and it will explain the purpose of the film: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grindhouse

I loved it. I totally 'got it' and laughed through the whole thing as I love bad 70s exploitation films. It was the Mexican version of "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song", an infamous blaxploitation film from 1971. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_Sweetback%27s_Baadasssss_Song

The only real problem with Machete is that it should have never been made because the average moviegoer (as you have shown) doesnt get it. They are not a fan of these types of films and they mistake its intentional camp with unintentionally bad filmmaking.

Oh yes! I laughed and laughed as I hadn't in years. I loved Machete. Watched it three times already. But I won't go recommending it to friends; they will not get it.

I had heard it described as "Mexploitation" and obviously it was tongue in cheek. In many ways it was very silly and over the top. The question is why make it in the first place. Why make a bad forgettable movie as an homage to bad forgettable movies?

The movie really is a POS, people can have a high-brow oh-look-we-get-it-and-that-makes-it-great mentality. Sometimes a POS is just a POS despite trying to cash in on old POS movies.

No, no... you still don't get it. You've got to make yourself very low-brow to get it. ;-)

Seriously, maybe "getting it" is not the right expression. I "like it". Most people won't.

In your opinion exploitation films are 'bad and forgettable'. In my opinion they are great fun and one of my favorite genres. Many agree with me, though I will concede the general audience doesnt.

I dont think it 'really is a POS'. I think its great fun. I also dont consider myself highbrow or look down on those who dont 'get it'. It would be nice if they gave people who enjoyed these films the same respect.

You are right and perhaps my wording was too harsh to anyone that enjoyed it. It was not my intention to demean those that may have seen the redeeming qualities while I see none.

I simply do not understand the appeal of watching actors of varying ethnicities degrade themselves by playing such hackneyed stereotypes. The only people I could see enjoying the movie would be those of the same ethnicity, as it would be obvious and ridiculous to them. I wonder if others, perhaps not experienced in said ethnic group, would be in jeopardy of having their opinion of the group influenced by movies that played to the stereotype.

A young viewer watching Machete, and not having much contact with Mexicans, might assume 50% had to sneak across the border and are day laborers, eating tacos from a truck and plotting the violent overthrow of the US.

You cannot tell me the blackploitation movies (shown outside of the black demographic) didn't perpetuate the feeling that all black people were either a)gang member, b)pimp, c)on drugs, or d) all of the above. Shaft's Big Score is a bad movie, but Machete takes it to a new level.

See, I grew up watching blaxploitation films. To me those guys were super cool. They were my heroes. To this day Rudy Ray Moore is one of my favorite actors. This is probably because , even though i am white, I grew up being taught to hate 'The Man' by my less-than-legit parents.

Probably same reason I consider Tony Montana a hero and as a teenager wanted to be like him.

Different people can view the same movie and walk away with totally different impressions.

We live just outside a small town Uckfield in East Sussex population around 15,000 and we are lucky enough to have still have a cinema...it's called the picture house and opened in 1920...O yes in case your wondering I'm a Brit living in UK.

I liked it too, although my gamer cousins thought it wasn't that good because it didn't relate completely to the video game.
