Let me guess - you're thinking about buying John Corbani's old Dino. I think I was probably about the last person in the U.S. to drive it before it was bought and shipped out to Germany.

If it's more than 25 years old no problem at all.

I suggest getting to the DMV main office (not one of the Express offices) first thing in the morning because you'll probably have to have a manager "walk" the process through the system. A few years ago I bought a 1963 Porsche 365 from someone in Ga. The VIN# was not in the national system and, of course, was not 17 digits. A manager had to override the system to accept the VIN no.

I also suggest going to the DMV website beforehand and downloading and filling out the registration forms before you go down. Also will need your certificate of insurance. Also, I trust the certificate of title has been signed by the seller if there is a place for that.

One other point: for sales tax purposes, the DMV regards cars that are more than 25 years old as having no fair market value. . . . so you have some leeway there.

the thing i'm worried about is that i saw a little clause on the NYDMV that mentioned they might require an official translation of the german title, from the german DMV...does anyone know anything about that? (or i just bring my german title down there, with insurance, etc..)

And consumption of entry form at a minimum

    Proof import taxes are paid.

May need to be VIN verified

Hire a titling service familar with out of country vehicles.
    Money well spent.

The DMV website does have phone numbers you can call for help. Perhaps it's worth calling in advance on the issue of whether the German title needs to be translated. And . . . if it does, you'll probably need a "certified" translation from a professional translator, not your neighbor who spent his senior year in Stuttgart.
