Carlyle Blackwell Ferrari Photo Questions ?

Some time ago my friend Steve sent me some scans of his Dad Ed's photographs from the 1950's among then were 10 by a well known Hollywood photographer and racing driver Carlyle Blackwell known to take picture of both track action and unusual 'studio' shots see link below :

3 of Carlyles photo's are of Ferrari's 1 a parade of Paravano Ferrari's, a Studio shot of a Paravano Ferrari, both of which I will come back to later and the one below.

My question to day is about Phil Hill in a 500 TR (not full width screen ?) which appears to be an action shot from a race, does any one know anything about the car (chassis number ?) the track where the picture may have been taken and the date on which it was taken ?

Finally would anybody know if this picture has any publishing history ?

Answers will be fully credited in my forth coming blog on the photo.

The picture above was used on the cover of Road & Track, September 1956. The photo credit reads:

"Carlyle Blackwell's cover shows Phil Hill driving a Ferrari at Pebble Beach this year."

 

El Wayne and Miltonian most helpful information, further googling has revealed the history of this beauty a debut win at Sebring in the hands of Fangio and Castellotti cannot have done the value of the vehicle any harm any more than the ownership by former Renault F1 supremo Jean Sage, this will be some blog ! I'll post the link on Friday

Merci Bruno, the penny has just dropped about the last race at Pebble Beach after Ernie Mcafee's tragic crash.

 

Carlyle Blackwell made a big impression on me in the early days with his center-spread photo of a beautiful, red D-type Jaguar.

 

I am only just beginning to realise how big a role Carlyle had as a photographer especially at R&T Ed seems to have purchased several slides that got used as covers including Phil Hill in the Ferrari above Jack Douglas in the #54 D-type, a Paravano Ferrari that made a Christmas issue cover (which) I shall be asking about in the fullness of time, and a Lotus XI driven by Jack Nethercutt which was on the cover of R&T in March 1957

I know of 13 covers for Road & Track using Blackwell photos, between 1954 and 1965.

 

After further research, I found these four ads appearing in Road & Track in 1956 & 1957.

He was practically giving away his originals, unless they were dupes.

 

They would be duplicates. Motor Sport magazine here in the UK did a similar deal in the 50s.

Ed Arnaudin appears to have purchased Set 1, Set 2, Set 3 and Set 4.

Ed seems to have swapped a duplicate Merc 190 for a photo of a #96 Kurtis Buick possibly driven by Bill Murphy, my guess is this would be the 1956 San Diego race which Bill won driving the #96.

Sorry it's taken me a while to get this unusual studio pic of a Paravano Ferrari posted I have seen on the intelweb that it was on the cover of R&T Magazine December 1956 :

I like it.. But yes, we all know that you prefer the beautifull lines of the Fantuzzi Maseratis... And I have to say you're right.

not 100% correct: the Ferrari 500TRC is a georgous looking car.

But I agree with someone who would state that the Scaglietti-design is quite often overpraised....!

I have picked up a lot of info from various FC and TNF threads on that chassis number.

Is 0538M the one at the far end of the line in the photograph below, I am going on nothing more than the black centre mirror cowling ?

Does anyone know the identities of the other two vehicles ?

Only remaining questions does anybody recognise the driver sitting in 0538M or possibly the venue ?

I know it's not a real race but did any of the US street circuits cut so close to buildings in 1956 ?

 

Old buildings... Small streets... Also the pavement on the right... Maybe Italy?
