Here's my 1976 GTB gas cap. The same cap is found on Daytonas, Dinos, GTC/4s, early Boxers and Fiat 124s... Image Unavailable, Please Login
I like how you think, Terry. And the gas cap connector on the 575M is a good idea. I'm going to buy two aftermarket caps, fuel and oil, for my 550 and put the "originals" away. That's $1,500 worth of stuff right there just waiting to be lost. Barry
So the black fuel filler cap was probably not the 'norm' from factory, rather the plain alloy one with horsey. Shoot me down but my guess is that many 'blacks' are substitutes where 348 owners have lost the original and opted for a very much cheaper solution?
If it is like mine, a screw on type, my 1977 alfa spider is the same thread and size. I know. I left my 348tb cap at the gas station. I tried the one on my alfa and it worked. I later went back and made them look under all the cabinets and there on the bottom one was my cap. All is well now. Phil
I ordered a black Alfa/Fiat cap for my 355. Will post pics when it arrives. I'm not going to risk losing a $750 gas cap!
Ok, I got the gas cap from Superperformance in the UK and I bought a used black one from ebay, period correct, I assume. They are quite a bit different, other than the color and form of course. If you look at the inside, the Ferrari logo one from Superperformance just shows a flat rubber seal. The black cap has actual ridges in the rubber seal and appears to be a lot thicker. It also moves around a bit, which tells me that it's not glued in and a lot more thicker and sturdier than the logo cap. Any thoughts...? Swap the seals and your good to go.. My seal sits loose as well.. Once the cap is tight that seal is going nowhere.. R
I used to hate going to fill up my Mondial and seeing the same pedestrian gas cap I used to have in my Lancia. I made a comment to the wife about it. Low and behold, for Christmas a couple of years back, she bought me an OEM aluminum Ferrari gas cap from Algar Ferrari for $300.00 (and yes it came in the pretty yellow and black box). It is the same part # (180320) for the the 348, among others. They have a massive inventory of parts down there, so I wouldn't be surprised if they still have some available.
I don't think so. My 1983 308QV has the same black cap as my 1990 348 and the very substantial rubber seal is identical in both. The aluminum logo cap I bought came with no rubber seal at all. I popped the rubber seal out of the black cap and installed it in the logo cap. Perfect fit, no slop whatsoever. Been working great for years. I have looked at many 308, 328, and 348 and a majority that I have seen have the black cap.
Eurospares have one of teh nicer aftermarket ones in stock for £95 https://www.eurospares.co.uk/Parts/180320/Ferrari?pi=3093
