When the aircon compressor was removed from my 308 earlier this year, the engine sound in the cabin was slightly altered. Now I'm hearing a low-pitched rotational noise from somewhere down under the engine on driver's side (NOT an engine noise). Bit scary being in the vicinity of the cam belts, but I don't believe it is coming from there and car is running fine apart from some carby issues. Anything that might have been overlooked when the compressor was removed that might be the culprit? Don't want to take the car to the workshop in Bris if I can avoid it until I've got the little car back and 308 can go to have it's carbies rebuilt. Thanks for any (sensible!) advice!

Karen, check vacume lines are sealed and check tensioner bearings on the cam belts, the belts might be fine but the tensioners are a problem....especially if they sieze up

Is it down under bank closest to cabin driver's side? If so, I suspect this as temp has been running slightly hotter than usual. Thanks, have to book it in!

Had a Fmechanic (CR) come with his stethoscope this morning - Noise in water pump bearing BUT similar noise also heard in tensioner bearer and with noise transfers can't be sure which is origin and which is transfer... verdict: don't drive it...
Now shopping for towtruck quotes...in some ways I shouldn't grizzle too much as it's only the second hiccup in 8 years of driving, but at the same time what flamin' else can go wrong this year? Don't bother with any smart replies to that, I'm not up to it.

water pumps are effectively a service item in 308's. Rebuild it each time you do the cam belts and change the tensioners pulleys with each belt change. Think of it as insurance...

Good news is that the pump is easy to access.

Don't rush into buying a replacement pump, they can be rebuilt. Mark at Enzotech will know how. I put a 308QV pump into my carby 308, they have larger bearings and last longer.

Yeah the car was going in for belts anyway (last done 4 yrs ago) so the only real drama is the cost of a flat bed and the mechanic to confirm what I suspected... should have just stuck it on the truck in the first place - brain is definately not functioning well at present...

Replaced timing belts and tensioners; mech reckons water pump is fine... probably was just having a bit of a panic attack but better safe than sorry I guess.
