With the arrival of daylight today,the focus for rescue teams,as it was overnight,is to locate and clear survivors before anything else.The city is extremely short of water and it will be several days before power is restored too. The weather here in Canterbury is rather cold for this time of the year at about 10 degrees C.

Mayor,Bob Parker is again doing a sterling job with his calm manner.He always has the ability to remain calm even under the most extreme pressure.

It seems that the death numbers will possibly end up in the hundredsas there are so many "unknowns" at present with regards to private houses,vehicles etc.There are still bodies in crushed vehicles in the city centre to be dealt with as the main concern,naturally is to save and stabalise the people still alive.

As I said in my post yesterday,we live 80kms away to the south but there were several quite sharp aftershocks during the night.We have an aunty we picked up on our way home from Christchurch staying with us.Her house internally,was totally re arranged.She is normally a very strong lady,but at the moment,is completely traumatised.There are thousands of people who are much worse off than she is,so the enormous toll it is taking on peoples mental state is probably hard to comprehend. Buildings can be replaced but the long term effect on people is going to be a very long term thing.

We are OK where we are,but I have to say,I have never seen anything like the devastation this has caused to Christchurch area.The last quake,to us,caused enormous damage,but compared to this one,was minor Thanks for the posts you guys are making,I will forward them on to Ferrari owners up there who havent internet access at present.

When I watched that feed yesterday, there was one young lady interviewed who bore a striking resemblance to either of my Friend's 2 daughters.

Still no word from Her via email, though.

Tonight the official death toll is 75 with 300 still unaccounted for.The rescue teams have moved away from several sites where there is no hope of survivors.The CTV building which has been receiving a lot of media coverage is one of these buildings.There is a possibility of a 26 storey hotel close by coming down as the ground underneath it has become unstable.
Unfortunately,one of the 50 people still in this building was a well known TV host who was great friends with many Ferrari Club owners in NZ,but especially here in Canterbury.

There are many great people from your countries pouring in to Christchurch to assist with the rescue mission.Its great to see just how quickly everyone is so willing to help out in a crisis such as this.The Australian Govt has generiously given $5,000,000 to the Red Cross here today.Its going to be years for the damage to infastructure and buildings to return to normal.None of us have a chance to fight "Mother Nature"when she rears her ugly head eh??

I'd never heard of 'liquifaction' before but that is super scary... Earthquakes are the scariest natural disaster I reckon because you generally have absolutely no warning.
