F 348 GTS: to change the cambelt I removed the cover of the cambelt and suddenly I found two little parts on the floor of my garage. I dont know the Place they are mounted. See the picture I attached (I put a lighter next to it so you can better estimate the size of the part) Pls help me... Image Unavailable, Please Login
I saw the pic before reading the full explanation lol I thought you'd found a lighter in there! Sorry but I don't know exactly what it is but it looks like a belt tensioner.
That is the guide shoe that is supposed to be mounted at the top of the belt path on both banks (there are two guide shoes) to keep the belt from having too much vertical slop. It is Ferrari part # 133824. Pap, and the others have pictures of it mounted. It is threaded into the timing belt shield. I'm going to guess you have the black plastic shields, and they cracked during your removal attempt, allowing this thing to fall off.
I dunno about that. The face of the shoe shows no wear/slap. Makes me wonder if it was ever mounted and just sitting inside the cover somewhere.
They shouldn't really have any wear on them. They are positioned close to the belt but there's no reason for them to press against it.
Interesting debate that. Mine actually had some wear marks on it and WAS mounted/fitted the wrong way. I used some carboard (folded up matchbox) to space it off the belt a little when I set it. I dont think it is supposed to ride on the belt, but has to have a close tolerance to prevent the belt from "jumping" off the cam gear.
I've always seen them with wear marks as well, mine included. When I reinstalled mine I set them at a 3/32" gap.
In line with what Troy said, the cam belt followers should NOT touch the cam belt. The follower is there to help prevent the belt from jumping off the pulley in the event of belt slap.
I also made sure mine didn't actually make contact with the belt when I re-installed them. Mine had no signs of wear at all but mega low mileage so no suprise. Be sure you put these two parts in the correct way around, by referencing the cutaway diagram in the thread above, they will physically fit either way!
Just curious. If I use my common sense (oke that isn't much :-D) than I see the cambelt turning clockwise. Both the inlet camshaft wheels have only 90 degrees "touch" of the cambelt. So changes ar bigger here that the belt will "jump"a tooth. So fa so good and Ferrari has designed that cambelt follower to avoid the "jump". But is the cambelt touches the cambelt followers you expect them to be mounted in the same way! The left one is getting "in" the belt and the right one "out" the belt if touched.(do you call that upstreams and downstreams??) Why not reversing the left one for safety and reliability??
