What are the correct lines for the lower body black paint?

Hello Scott,

that depends on the body form. For your two late 246 GTS attached pictures show the correct lines. Originally the matt black paint was put on the car by brush.

Andres, Your 04866 and my 04808 have the same black paint lines as shown in the posted photos. Earlier Dinos (like my 03964) had the same rear-end lines, but the side black paint ended at the crease in the rocker panels, instead of between the crease and the lower door cut. The front lines were a bit different, due partly to the different configuration of the earlier front pans. The later cars did have a higher front pan "watermark," however. Fred

I had a mechanic who had worked on a couple dozen Dinos, and a body shop guy as well tell me they had never seen two that were exactly alike.

The mechanic theorized that as the week progressed, the painter's back would get stiffer, and the line would creep up the body panels accordingly. So a Monday car would have less black paint than a Friday car. I think he was joking.

Even the paint shop guy wasn't sure. What he did was paint them all the same as his '73 GTS.

I think I have pics somewhere. I'll try to dig them up.

Here are images of the 7657 mile original paint Dino *04234* to see how it was done on that particular day in 1972. Images will also hopefully answer what was the correct pouch and how was the chassis number masked off.

I strongly suspect that this is true. FWIW, I believe the line of demarcation on cars with flared fenders differed somewhat from standard cars.

What a sharp car- The headlight covers have the right curve to them too & the Campy's look great! I will put both of those options on my #01832 whenI am finished with it!!

 

I do not know if I will be able to find a good brush here, they shed hair ...;-)

the black paint on the sills just up to the sill edge, not almost up to the door edge

 

Matthias - both of my late 1971 manufacture date (2900 and 3002) cars left the factory with the black trim considerably lower than illustrated on your car. The 3002 has the original paint.

In the rear, the black does not cover above the muffler cutout. And on the sides, the black stays below the first break in the rocker panel, well below the door threshold. And in the front it is significantly lower than illustrated on both your silver Dino and the red one photographed in this thread.
