I am sure this question has been asked a number of times and yes there have probably been a number of answers, but I am sorry but I cannot find the definitive answer. I have a 90 TR UK spec with 13,000 all documented from new. The car had its belts done jan 2010, so by the advice given so far they should be changed jan 2012. Mileage will be 14,000 by then. I read somewhere about 3 year belts? I have never heard of one ever going snap? whats the opinion here? Personally three years would be right in my mind, but you guys may know better. I do not believe that this will affect the FSH which it has, many cars are stored and 5 years can often pass between service schedules, this would not stop me buying a car if it had'nt covered significant mileage.

So come on guys....in the real world, not ferrari specialist or dealer world, whats the time intervals on the belts?

I have an idea. Let's setup a fund. Buy a Tr.. And drive it untill the belt snap... Then we have an idea how long they could go without changing the belts. In the mean time I'm holding on to the required maintance intervals...

You must be kidding. There are several hundred threads here on exactly this topic and you decided to start another?

It's like starting another manual vs. F1 thread, hundreds of answers.

We should change the name of the site to "timingbelts-and-gearboxchoices.com"

    It should be.

Seriously, there are so many threads a search cannot bring them all up and starting more just makes existing ones that much harder to find. It is idiotic.

It should require mod approval to start a new one.

The same kind of people that cant be bothered to open an owners manual to find the tire pressure.

He could be a long time lurker. I knew about many multiple thread issues before I even started posting.

But if you are brand new than there is a wealth of info here that can answer all your questions and more.

I think what he is seeking is the most recent consensus of opinion in this regard. Since the topic is obviously of great importance, I don't understand why these inquiries are so unwelcome.

I find it disturbing that you are going to put only 1,000 miles on a car with-in a 1 year period.. Jan 2010 to Jan 2011 = 1 year. Jan 2011 to Jan 2012 = 2 years. Jan 2012 - Jan 2013 = 3 years.. You may want to check your math.. or you have this compulsion to get your belts done.. Myself and a hand few of others and I mean a hand few are the only ones driving these cars.. Do this.. Leave the car in the garage and let it pickle till you hit the ten year mark. then have it towed to a mechanic of choice to get the belts done then have it towed right back into the garage only to have it pickle for another 10 years.. You will save yourself a decent sum of money.. then you can boast to other Ferrari owner's that you go 10 years on your timing belts and NEVER had an issue.. These timing belt threads are very frustrating. Here is my deal.. I drive car 3-4 times a week and I am racking up the miles.. 5 years for me. If I did not drive the car?? Would not even bother.. and yes I consider 1,000 miles over the course of a 3 year belt interval, not driving the car. Your car, your money, your decision..

Because in case you didn't bother to read or do a search yourself there are literally hundreds of threads that already have the most recent concensus.

Everytime another gets started it adds to the list of several hundred making it more difficult to find the threads that actually have useful information so it is a counter productive move.

I can assure you, there is no new information, there has not been for years and the second there is this place will have 200 new threads started that day before the people in California even get out of bed in the morning.

I was planning to change my belts every 5 years. Told my wife that this upcoming winter I definitely plan to do it, as the 5 years are up.

She pointed out that I bought the car before my daughter was born...she will be 7 soon...

I was shocked. NO WAY!!! I just checked my ferrarichat profile...I signed up in 2003. Oh my God...Where does the time go? Was ferrarichat really around in 2003? Ooooooo

Would you change the belts first before driving this "community test car", as a baseline to make sure the full life of the belts is known?

It seems like 5 years gets the most votes.

whats not productive are people posting things that aren't productive.

You can answer the persons question and thus make this thread productive!

I go 7-10 years with my Ferrari's...done that for the last 20+ years with the 5 out of 6 Ferrari's I have owned with timing belt(s). But I do drive mine 2-4 times a month which prevents belt set and keeps the engine otherwise healthy.

Just curious as to who holds the worlds record on highest miles and years between belt changes? That would be interesting!
Who's gone longer than 10 years?

I find the search sometimes limiting so what I am building is similar to what I made for the cross reference thread for parts. What I am compiling is a table for common posted and useful posts per issue
e.g. Clutches, injectors, belts etc, this could be made a sticky and cut down a reposts, which I am guilty of also. Hope to have done soon, after that I expect to update the cross reference spreadsheet

    Cheers

You may be surprised at how many TR's are out there with their original (20+ year old) belts still running fine. You can have a 2 yr ols belt fail and have a 20 year old belt run forever, it's all the luck of the draw...
