I've spoken to over a dozen friends in Tokyo & all are ok .. shaken & stirred, but ok nonetheless.

I lived in Tokyo for over 6 years & always worried about "the big one". My hopes & prayers are with everyone affected by this disaster.

i have a dear friend who is very senior @ sony. he was there but remakably flew back to manhattan last night before the 8.9!

his luck is generally like that.

i am very concerned for the folks affected by the tsunami...i fear the death toll will mount.

We knew all along that the Big One was long overdue and yet when this one flexed her full force, the magnitude of destruction is yet to unfold. Metroplitan Tokyo was spared of major calamities, but everything was paralyzed and people were stranded. The faultline was over 400km long and tsunamis engulfed everything along the way. Secondary giant fires from spilled fuels, nuclear power plants in question (many located in northern Japan), experts announced this was the worst earthquake ever and the closest one on record was over a thousand years before. The terrible news keep coming in. Just terrible and helpless. Jimmy

Thanx a bunch for everyone's concern. I live in Yokohama and work in Tokyo, heavily populated region. We were fortunate in that epicenture was north of us and damages were limited. Power outages, total mass transit shutdown, on and on, but we were spared.

Unfortunately, things look devastating in the northern region. We knew all along that the big bang was long overdue and this one was the largest ever. The faultline that ripped was announced to be 400km long and the subsequent release of energy was beyond human imagination. It was a sad day. I hope the aftereffects would not cause further destructions. Jimmy

Jimmy, if you say Tokyo wasn't hit as bad as other places does that mean Saitama was spared the worst as well? I have an ex there.

Yes, Chris. What you see on CNN and other news is northern third of the main Honshu Island, mostly along the east coastline facing the Pacific and the epicenture was offshore. The size of plate was announced as 400 by 200km area, more than hundred times powerful than the big one that hit Kobe region over a decade ago which killed over 6000.

You can say that the vicinity of Tokyo metropolis region was spared from the worst. There were people here who got killed for one reason or another but this is nothing. I think you can allay your fear for your ex. Jimmy

Hey, Jimmy - it's going to be frustrating with multitudes of daunting tasks and obstacles to overcome - rather than go nuts - don't be afraid to rant or share your sorrows or joys about this 'n that to your F-C Brothers 'round the world.

I just can't imagine being in the shoes of someone who has yet to make it *home, without the things we take for granted, like rest, shelter, transportation or food and drink . . . *all the while not even knowing if the home is still there. Ugh.

Thank You, Wax. Almost two days have passed and I don't think the government or anyone can comprehend the scope of damage and what has happened. Although I was only shaken badly and scared the wits to put it mildly (I seriously thought this was it), slowly we are grasping the terrible, terrible tragedy which is unfolding before us. This country is well experienced and prepared for quakes and tsunamis, but no one, not even the experts could have imagined the magnitude and extent of damage that took so many lives. Watching the visual horror from the broadcasts, there's nothing but numbness and helplessness, cannot comprehending what has happened. In disaster movies you see these CG effects, this is reality. So far, the confirmed dead is only in the excess of 1600. This is only the start. They just announced on TV that the magnitude of the quake was revised a M9.0 !!! The difference of only M0.2 is translated as twice the force. In other words, the energy strength difference between M8.8 and M9.0 is two times the energy destruction. Jimmy

Seeing all of this is really sad. Just sad. I'm going through a gallery on Yahoo.

What pisses me off is that alot of people are saying this is payback for Pearl Harbor. I'm not going to go in depth, but maybe some of those people should experience what the people in Japan are going through right now...especially those in the northern parts. They've lost their homes, loved ones, and more.

My condolences go out to everyone affected by this.

What happened .. happened during wars!!! each side lost lives. Live and let live :)
Gloating and saying that Japan deserved what happens is really sad!

The Japanese for many years, have been living peacefully and bullied by China and Russia recently. Its really sad, what happened.

May their souls rest in peace! God Bless Japan and everyone effected.
