HE rotors, HELP!!!

I decided to install the rotors myself.

Question on the direction of the rotors:

The box says front right but the rotor has an L on it. Also, the grooves would lean forward if I follow the box.

Every rotor has the same problem. Box says right or left and the rotor the opposite.

Do the grooves lean forward or back??????




I am thoroughly confused.

All things considered not too bad. Also added SS braided brake lines.

Soaked them and they cane apart fairly easy.

Took a total 6 hours beginning To end including lunch and a quick run to Sears.

 

This looks wrong to me, because the rotation will move the dust inside, but the original intention should be to move it to the outside, or not ?

I'm not really sure if it matters that much which way they go on but you have a point.

The grooves relieve the hot gasses that are created between the pad and rotor under extreme braking.

More important would be the direction of the cooling vanes that are typically cast into a brake rotor. If they are cast at an angle they should be installed as shown.

It looks like the slots angle forward, the opposite that the description says.

I suspect that as your illustration shows it is more important that the slots be in the opposite direction to the internal vanes to minimize weakening of the rotor.

 

Interesting... according to this, my brake discs are on backwards on my MINI. However, the manufacturer explicitly advised me to install them that way and provided pictures to demonstrate, so that's odd.

I wonder if that's why I've had such extensive problems with heat... damaging brake lines, boiling fluid, and setting fire to brake pads.

What caused the confusion to me is that the boxes were all clearly marked FR, FL, RR, RL, unmistakenly.

However, every time I removed a disk that was supposed to be Left, there was a big R on it and vice versa.

If you look at the cooling vanes, they appear omni directional.

I trusted Daniel here (and his knowledge of HE rotors) and mounted them like his picture shows.

The rotor set was $1600 from Ricambi.
I also installed SS brake lines and new pads ~$300 iirc.

I haven't had a lot of seat time. Bedded them but then had to get home.

First impressions: pedal travel has easily been reduced by an inch. pedal feels much much stiffer overall. Good initial bite.

So far I am very pleased with the upgrade.
Of course, my car was on original rotors and they were beginning to show a significant "lip" on the edges.

Then on Sunday I installed a new battery.

Attempted to wiggle it out through the top but then ended up removing the LR tire and then it was super easy.

After installation I did the obligatory 15min ECU reset (until the fans cone on).

Notices that passenger side had a stronger exhaust flow than the drivers side, specifically the outside pipe. I wonder if that's related to the broken baffle inside the x-ost exhaust.
Probably need to either rip the x-oar open and fix the baffle or find a challenge exhaust

All on all, busy weekend.

Well, I'm on a tear.

Decided to address the rattle inside the x-ost from the broken baffle inside (that x-ost was unwilling to deal with under warranty even though the exhaust was less than 3 years old at the time).

Took it out without lifting the car or removing the bumper.

Ok, I need a source for the two donuts that connect the cat and the exhaust. My old one's are chewed up.

Also, I need the 4 screws that hold the cat and exhaust together.

Any ideas or part numbers/dimensions?

Well, the x-ost is toast.

Opened the can an it's ugly in there. Material surrounding the baffles is broken away and the exhaust gases seriously singed the sound deafening material inside.

Well, now what?

Challenge exhaust?
Stock exhaust?
Use the skeleton to create a goth exhaust?

I am open for low cost ideas.

I like the sound of the stock silencers with cats replaced with test pipes. If this is an option it's cheap. You can find used stock silencers easily. Test pipes from Ricambi are $700 for the pair.

 

Get that exhaust hardware from Daniel. I found it is less than at the dealer and you can buy only what you need.

 

Yeah, ordered it from him.

Of course now that the xost is totally toast installation will have to wait...
