Tranny Conversion F1 to 6 speed Poll

The 360 F1 is like a woman with no legs -- once you have one, you'll never go back.

 

I'm happy with my 6 speed manual - the car is 11 years old now with reasonably high mileage and I'm glad I don't have to worry about all that electronic / hydraulic stuff going south.

I also enjoy the manual experience makes a nice change from the DD Auto-box.

What a great line! I love the F1 as well.

 

Many reasons. I believe it was apparent were transmission technology was headed and they used that technology in the CS. It also gave the owners of the CS that F1 feeling and faster shift times. I believe there are very few that can "heel & toe" shift as fast as the F1 system on a CS.

 

Had 6 speeds my whole life and I have had enough of them, although 3 of my newer cars still have them if I had my choice on those it would only be DC F1 for me! Everyone always wants to tell me how a 6 speed is a real mans car and the sad part is most guys who are telling me that can't drive them, they just think they can!

 

I was thinking about this the other day:

Just WHERE are the 6 speed drivers of the future going to come from? Kids today are raised on autoboxes and Xboxes. Where are you going to get the training or understanding of "how cool it is"?

Who is going to want to buy a Ferrari as THEIR FIRST MANUAL car? Do you really want to learn how to shift with one?

I have a Mini Cooper 6 speed. Sometimes its fun, and somethings it's just a chore as I simply go up the gear, down the gear, let off the clutch, let on the clutch-- stuck in traffic on the freeway.

There's a place for 6 speeds. It just happens to be before the year 1995.

It reminds me of an old Jerry Seinfeld joke:

"What is it with the Chinese and chopsticks? They've SEEN the FORK!"

 

It's actually interesting that you mention this as I love technology.. but prefer to shift my own cars and the only place I might consider an F1 is for a track car..

In Mexico the cars are mostly manual. (Surprised how al the cabs were at least) Perhaps its an american thing.. or relates to "higher end cars" being automanuals.. not sure..

 

I got my first experience operating a manual by riding dirt bikes as a kid (my favorite was my YZ-80). When it came time to get my driver's license, I already knew how to drive a stick. I drove my Dad's car up the street like I had been at it for years (which in essence I had).

Kids today still ride dirt bikes, quads, etc. They read about the manual sports cars still offered today - Corvettes, Porsches, etc. Manual shifting isn't dead yet, but it would be a shame if it someday becomes a lost art. It's a rewarding skill that offers that satisfying tactile feeling of operating a mechanical thing. Of course, it's not for everybody...to each, their own.

I do think modern paddle shifters are impressive and efficient. Ideally, one needs multiple cars, both manual and paddle shifters. An F50 and 458 would do nicely.

You might be missing the point. Downshift time (heel and toe) is irrelevant.

 

Look at it this way.

Let's say that all boxes until 15 years ago were auto's -- even Ferrari's.

Then, someone said "hey, you can do this manually and it's a lot more engaging!".

What would we say?

Most likely --- "are you crazy? Who would want that???".

Humans are creatures of habit. It takes time to get adjusted to new things, even if they're better. There are some people who still don't trust computers and the internet.

Kids of tomorrow won't care at all. All they want is the latest and greatest -- just like they throw their video game consoles out every 3 years.

 

First car I drove was a 1944 Jeep in 1962. No automatic. Have had a ton of manual transmission Ferraris, Porsches, and Corvettes since then. Plus time in 18 wheelers and other trucks. Needless to say, heel and toe and double clutching (one level up from heel and toe) are second nature, but....I love my 575M F1. It is great fun to drive and just another skill set to learn and practice.

My father flew P-47s in WW-II. Took a lot of skill to take off, land, and fly formation with all that torque constantly fighting you. I have 2000+ hours of fighter time, all in turbine-engined aircraft, and did not miss the torque flying skills at all. Times change.

Not to jump this thread but that's amazing. My hat's off to him.

 

It's amazing how often we hear this misconception. Paddles only cut time on upshifts. In any event, paying for instruction is much more cost effective than buying flappy paddles if you want to decrease lap times.

3 pedals for life. i've driven many f1 cars. Takes away too much of the fun for me.

Sorry it's taken so long! Works been a killer I've been doing a lot of traveling again. LA in a week, possibly Russia a month later! We will definitely meet up though I'm dying to hear your car!
