I think the Obrist collection has been broken?

    Others will know.

He was the one that FINALLY got the lost, forsaken GTO "out of the field" where it was rusting away on a trailer.

It looks like 200 copies of that book you fonund were printed by Obrist himself, he lost his collection to Bernie Ecclestone and Bruce MacCaw, when the banks repossed the loans.

    Hi Maarten,

I have another magazine/book on this collection.

It is like a portfolio for investors, (to invest in to the collection), it is A4 in size and portrait in orientation and outlines the cars in the collection including chassis number and what cars it would look to add to the collection.

I cannot immediately put my hands on it but will do over the next couple of days.
Ironically, the forward is written by one Bernie Ecclestone...

Just 200 copies are made? Wow... Makes me even more proud of having it in my collection...

BTW , I don't think Mr Obrist and Mr Ecclestone are indeed close friends... ;)

    Paul,

Look forward to see some pictures of these printed matters...
Funny... Preface written by "best friend Ecclestone" How appropriate... ;)

Sorry, but there are a number of errors in this post. The Obrist collection was sold to Ecclestone in the mid 1990s, so over a decade and a half ago.

Obrist also never owned the "out in the field GTO", as that was a different Swiss collector Engelbert Stieger.

Ecclestone bought the entire collection around 1995/1996, but then sold the sports car portion of the collection to JOHN McCaw in 1998. Bernie still retains many of the F1 cars.

John McCaw has since sold a few of the cars to his brother Bruce, but neither one was originally involved in the sale from Obrist to Bernie.

    Thanks Jarrett!

    I was posting from memory......

    I appreciate your corrections.

R&T had a great write up of Innes Ireland driving the GTO after restoration.

Anyone here recognize the red Converse shoes?????

Does anyone here have "Ferrari 250/GT" by Jim Riff? It claims to offer "service and maintenance for the 250 GT, 250 GTE, 250 GTL, 250 SWB and similar models".

This description sounds like a collection of maintenace and parts manual reprints but is it worthwile?

Yes, I have had this for several years.I am not in the 250 resto business but if was I wouldn't be without it. I have a section of my collection devoted to service, maintenance, rebuild manuals and personal notes on many of the pre 1967 cars and this is one of the better. What you might do is contact tom schaunessy,ed niles and some of the other "experts for suggestions. If you are into the 275/365 cars there are many copies of the original manuals available at "search.ebay.com/ferrari'. just one man's opinion tongascreww

Thanks for the info. Wish I had a 250 to restore... but my main interest is in the pre-Fiat cars and I really like service / maintenance manuals.

Yesterday my copy arrived. For me this book is a disappointment. Yes, it does contain a lot of info on maintenance and extracts of parts manuals (which I like), but some pages are hardly readable because of poor quality. This is explained in the editor's notes but I assume that better quality reprints are available. Why not use these if you do a reprint of a book?

My main concern is that the book pretends to be a manual for the whole 250 series while it is not. Chapters deal with "250 GT brakes", "250 GT engine" etc but it never explaines exactly for which 250 GT model (based on a few foto's most likely the 250 GTE 2+2). On many pages also data are provided for other models like the 330 GT, 365 GT (on one page even for the Dino 308 GT4).

If you are interested in the mechanical development of the 250 GT engine, this book is a huge disappointment. Details of the 128 type engine or differences between the C, D, F variants (not to mention the differences between the 128 and 168 types): it is all missing.

For owners doing the maintenace of their 250 GTE 2+2 themselves I would suggest to find a better quality reprint of a manual dedicated to this car.

If your interest is in the mechanical (development) side of the 250 series: get yourself a copy of "250 GT Competition cars" of Jess Pourret.

I just received a copy of this remarkable book. It was published in 1995 by the mayor's office of Maranello to celebrate 50 Years of Ferrari in the town. It is in Italian and English with interesting articles and unusual pictures going back to 1943 and starting with the Aero Avio days. There is also a remarkable portfolio of 14 pages of original colour lithographs of the early cars. For me this is one of the highlights of my collection and would like to hear comments from anyone familiar with this volume. just one man's opinion tongascrew
