Don't see the significance. The glass in the roadster retracts from the roof line and A pillar. The fact that the A pillar comes with the door or not seems irrelevant.

The main reason aftermarket doors operate the way they do is that they can't mimic the hinge and the hinge pivot point. If you try and rotate a Gallardo door the same it would foul the quarter panel. Has nothing to do with the glass. My point is that even forgetting the glass, you could never get a vertical door operating on a Honda, Gallardo etc.

Im glad there's the Gallardo with the regulard doors. The Aventador fails with the new doors and the rest of the design is a nightmare. For the first time I can honestly say that the top of the line Lamborghini sucks in looks and I never thought that day was gonna come. Long live the Countach, the best from Lamborghini and second to that in the modern car category the Gallardo.

Something isn't right with these Audighini's, looks wise. I don't know what it is and I can't put my finger on it, but something isn't right.

Well, if I'm wrong, and it isn't about safety, what's your theory on the Aventador's doors opening the way they do?

The UNECE handles vehicle requirements for Europe

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Forum_for_Harmonization_of_Vehicle_Regulations

Here is the latest amendment on door latches. Most of the short 3 page amendment is focused on vertically opening doors. Date of entry into force: 17 March 2010

    http://www.unece.org/trans/main/wp29/wp29regs/r011r1a4e.pdf

If you would like to read all of them:

    http://www.unece.org/trans/main/wp29/wp29regs.html

Door latches is Regulation. 11 with 4 Amendments (the above being the most recent).

Another advantage of the door opening a little wide is that you can get in the car by going between the door and the car instead of having to duck below the door. Obviously, I don't have any problem with the doors aesthetically myself. The door handle you pull is the same (albeit in a different place) but the latch mechanism appears quite different.

I really don't know - thus my question here. Grasping at straws I thought of the monocoque shell somehow dictating things. But so far we have this being passed off as some mysterious safety issue without any backup... Time to read the UNECE post.

The similar regs for the US are the FMVSS.

    http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/standards/

Here's what looks like an older copy of thee actual standards (couldn't find the actual rules on a short search of the site above, just a table of contents).

    http://www.crash-network.com/Regulations/FMVSS/fmvss.html

Those rules go on forever. Here's their comments on one of them, 310 pages on the new rules talking about ejection mainly during rollover alone. No way I could read through these unless someone was paying me.

    http://www.nhtsa.gov/staticfiles/rulemaking/pdf/Ejection_mitigation_FR_Jan2011.pdf

It seems like what they are all concerned about is not a situation where someone is trapped in the car but making sure people aren't ejected. So, they implemented new regs for making sure a vertical force doesn't open the door, etc.

I agree the straight scissors arrangement has a certain 'succinctness' about its whole that is lost with the new doors, but I think a bit too much is being made here about how a little extra angle is complete fail. I think we're having a little bit of 'drama' for the sake of effect.

    Hey Jerry,

I enjoy reading your posts because you are so opinionated. I think you're an asset to the forum.

You do however have the bully mentality and a proclivity for putting yourself above others, which is why I found it so amusing when you got your ass handed to you by Lesia.

I'm not sure which of you is more qualified when it comes to design, but Lesia's vocabulary, eloquence and wit is clearly sharper than yours.

Nevertheless, great spirited, competetive banter about a really exciting car, the Aventador, which my untrained eye really thinks looks like a bigger, beefier and more aggressive Gallardo. But that is why I like it. I always thought the G looked more well thought out than the Murcie, and even the LP640.

    Cheers,

    Peter

P.S I agree about the firebird. It doesn't belong in the discussion ^.*

Finally! Someone who agrees with me..it's a bigger beefier more agressive, 'better', version of a Gallardo and sibling...and that's NOT a bad thing! :)

    I said it before
    and repeat it now

Gallardo was/is a hyper design way ahead of the Murcielago

but all clueless guys failed to see that
just because it was the "unexpensive" entry model without Lambo doors ...

Certainly the current Gallardo with the reworked front is one of the great supercar designs, it's biggest strength being that it looks like a supercar should. That the new car has much of the Gallardo in it is nothing but a good thing.

Ive never been very eloquent nor consider myself very good at 'teaching'.

I obviously do not feel I got my ass handed to me. The people who feel it looks like a Gallardo are simply wrong. The Gallardo took its design elements from the Murci bloodline. The Gallardo looks like a Lambo. Its not my opinion, it is fact. But its impossible for me to show people something they cant see without putting them through training like I and other professional designers have.

    Heres my analogy.

I am not a foodie. I dont have a sophisticated palate. I think Buca Di Beppo is pretty much the pinnacle of Italian cooking. Ive eaten at the 5 star restaurants but I cant see what the hubbub is all about. I still think Buca tastes better. But I also realize that people with trained, sophisticated palates taste things differently than I do...they are more aware of the flavors and textures. I cant taste what they do.

Same with design. Most people have untrained eyes and cant see what people like I do. They are only able to focus on certain simplistic aspects of a design. This is why my GF used to look at my yellow F355 and my yellow Viper and think they looked the same. The yellow was such a standout design element that coupled with them both being low slung 2 seaters caused her to not see how drastically different they are.

This is why some here think the Aventador looks like Firebird. Now you disagree with that comparison...why ? Because your spatial/design recognition abilities are better than that person.

However mine are better than 99% of the worlds and i see things the 99% wouldnt otherwise see.

Fact is the Aventador doesnt look like a Gallardo except for three styling elements:

    A) the profile of the greenhouse/ curve defining the bottom of the windows, which was carried over from the Countach/Diablo/Murci not taken from the Gallardo (an important distinction)

    B) the side intake which, while similar to the Gallardo is also similar to dozens of other cars and definitely not unique to the Gallardo and

    C) The mirrors. Which is the only real argument I think the 'it looks like a Gallardo' people have since it is the only element originated on the Gallardo. Of course if using the same mirrors suddenly means a car looks just like another then every car company has big problems.

Those three styling elements will only make it look like a Gallardo to the untrained eye that focuses on such broad style elements and is also unaware of the history of the Countach-Aventador bloodline.

This all reminds me of how my GF gets frustrated with me when we debate the law. She is a successful lawyer and I am obviously, not. She gets frustrated with my untrained comments and opinions. I think I make good points but to her they are usually ludicrous and without sending me to law school, too difficult to adequately explain to me.

Anyway I only posted as i didnt want you to think i was ignoring you. I have no intention of getting back into this debate.

I'm a highly trained automotive design expert - and I think you overlook some major similarities between the two cars. I also think it's a little unfair to state that because people have "untrained eyes" they are wrong in saying that the Aventador looks like a Gallardo.

In the below image, the green lines identify creases and body lines that are almost identical on both vehicles
    [IMG]

And this is a layered view of the side profiles of both vehicles. I believe there are almost as many similarities as there are differences.

I don't intend to offend you in any way but I believe your interpretation of the "facts" is really just your "opinion." And honestly I don't think there is anything wrong with the design similarities - I happen to love the Gallardo and think that the Aventador was a near-perfect evolution of the lambo design characteristics.

I think the awkward door design has EVERYTHING to do with those "8 air bags", look at how WIDE (thick if you will) the door is, there is just no way they could make the door open "up" like a Diablo, unless they included part of the roof (like a Ford GT) in the door. Or the car would have to be a lot wider at the doors so the necessary safety equipment could be "outboard" enough to enable the door to open up...but that would like be a very awkward design.

In other words, the door HAS to open outwards to clear the roof because the darn thing is so wide because of all the "safety" equipment contained within the door.

That is the "simple" reason why the door has to open out. There is ZERO added 'roll over' protection in this door design (if the hinge(s) can auto-covert in time of the car being inverted to make the door open out instead of up...but that has nothing to do with making the 'up' movement safer in accident situations).
