? Think Diablo Roadster, Murci Roadster....didn't each have somewhat 'frameless' windows? You maybe mean the "back brace" and A-pillar sliver being absent.

The thing that just gets me is why a hardtop Lambo needs/requires crossmembers over the motor...just slip shod frame design, has to be. I gave them a "break" on the Murci Roadster when I first noticed the crossmembers but on a totally new design (Murci had a lot of Diablo in it still)...whacky...on a full hard top...why? Why didn't the Diablo (even the Diablo Roadster) need this?

and the darn thing isn't even 'centered' over the motor, geez!

You're not kidding.

In fact, I don't see how it can be contained in any 'covered carrier' 18wheeler I have ever seen. Most hardly accommodate the Diablo. This car is MUCH wider when the doors(even one) are open than a Diablo.

I truly wonder how they will be carried around (flatbed wrecker? seems that is all that would work)

Another 'thing' not mentioned thus far in this thread is

notice how the door is never open when the car is moving...

could it be that the Aventador cannot be backed up with the door open (so you can take a look at your clearance)..if so, that's a deal breaker!

I'm pretty sure this was the case in 'egear' Murcielagos

bummer if this is the case in the 'no other option but egear' Aventador

what do you call this, a "double A-pillar", one that is part of the "A frame" (as pretty much all cars have) and a "little A" support brace?

just noticing...but it looks rather stout, more "carryover" engineering from the Gallardo?

but isn't definitely not part of the "window", it is structural, definitely a 'cost cutting' move or so it would seem...

ok, ok enough posts by me already,

but I think I figured out the door thing with an even simpler explanation:

COST

it would cost TOO MUCH to make the door open 100% vertically

given the design requirement of "must have vertically opening door on flagship automobili"

it was just cheaper to design an "outwardly" opening hinge that gets you 'really close' to a true vertical open than to design an interior that could accommodate a true vertical opening, think:

1. door-located airbags, surely brought over 100% intact from an Audi vehicle ..ie. mass produced --much too expensive to design one unique to the Aventador (see previous image post with the size of that thing..if that is what the protrusion is)

2. frame modifications such as hinge location and structural supports

there, I think that's it

 

Ok, more 'evidence' of COST being the overrding factor in the awkward door opening.

On a Gallardo the door 'hinge' is at the "small A" structural support member (see image below).

Since the Aventador 'follows' (as it shares a lot with the structure of the Gallardo...again, 'COST' is the significant working factor) it actually was a bit of work to put the 'hinge point' out in front of this member...

Because this 'member' is obviously critical to structural integrity there was no way to 'leave it intact' and have a truly vertically opening door.

Well put. And it's a huge improvement on the Murciélago which had something rather bloated about it. We're back to lean and taut now. Oh, and if I'm allowed to use layman's terms without disqualifying myself from the conversation, it's pointy at the front!

I just remembered, my ex went to Parsons (N.Y) on a scholarship and this other girl I know came out of Art Center (Pasadena) and went on to design for Ford. I'll ask them for their "trained eye" opinions.

Only one thing wrong with your cost cutting theory JTSE30. The 'small A' structural member is part of the monocoque of the Aventador. Something that obviously doesn't exist on the gallardo, so therefore was not carried over/re-used to cut cost but was designed in from the beginning.

I don't know why they did it. I like the straight up opening of the traditional doors. Looking at the monocoque, there appears to be no reason for it other than someone at lambo likes the look of gallardo doors better.

other than having a similar profile, what does the carbon monocoque car share with with the aluminum spaceframe one? the same blanks? "i don't think so Raul"

 

One thing that strikes me every time I see that Aventador carbon work is: How did McLaren manage to generate so much more hoopla about what, at a glance at least, would seem to be far less adventurous use of carbon? Am I missing something as far as McLaren's use of carbon is concerned or do Lamborghini need to give their PR department a kick in the pants?

 

very simple mate: McLaren hype (warranted or not is another debate for another day) is 100X bigger than Lambo because Mc is a company that lives and breaths (supposedly) on tech and RACING. that one word is what they have traded heavily on. thus making much more hoopla of everything. Lambo can't go around waving their pedigree (so to speak) because they don't have any, even though in truth Lambo at the moment is prob leading all of them (Porsche, Ferrari, McL) in R&D and is committed big time.

 

are your reading my mind? stop seriously, that 'bloated' perception might be due to the rear 'hips', which the Murcie range really don't have. the Aventador splits the difference between the Murcie hips and the Gallardo's. to me= WIN.

I think it is one of the most obvious similarity and I am pretty sure that if Lamborghini had designed mirrors that looked more like those on the Murciélago, lots of people would not be so hard pressed to conclude that the Aventador is a big Gallardo.

I for myself would change these mirrors though ... I do not find relevant the forward raked angle ...

I repeat it, the Aventador is great looking car and definately a improvement over the previous Murciélago design! Only the rear is already a classic!

The only thing 'obvious' is the material used for the frame is different. Otherwise, the frames look very similar, wouldn't you agree?

Well had they kept it a "Murcielago" Rather than try and pass it on as the new flagship id be understanding to the whole 911, Esprit and NSX evolutionary ordeal but you don't recycle a car like that and then try and release it back as the new model. It says your "half assing" or compromising for better words.

If there's any great indication from Lamborghini and that is much will not change about the current design. We will likely see the Roadster version, An anniversary edition with a crazy markup price because of the paint job. LP640 model like dubbed LP750 and an SV. The car will not even break 850hp in its life time to compete with the Enzo Replacement or the Veyron which is why I say it will take a backseat to Ferrari overtime due to the fact they are gonna milk the Revention look until people get board with it just like Metallica did back in the late 90's when their music went to Sh...... Like music today you can find newer bands that are better just like new supercars like the Replacement Zonda.

Pagani Simply "Started over" with the huayra. The doors open up like an Isdera 112I, the front and the back of the car look totally different than the Zonda, the interior not so much but its exceptable and many more new options that were not seen with the Zonda. I like it much better than the Avendator. The only thing that bothers me is no rear wing option. Other than that it looks like a modern day Isdera and not many cars these days follow that partciular design.

Lamborghini on the other hand "Recycled" the styling cues from the Murcielago Roadster, Gallardo and the Revention, slapped them together and you have the Avendator. Sooner or later its gonna get played out and Lamborghini's are going to become modern and mainstream.

 

Not at all. The new car has the same stance, proportions, many of the general shapes and much of the balance between the major shapes and masses as the old car. Putting the door hinges in a different place hardly counts as reinvention.

 

Yes, agree completely. I was just trying to say they're not re-using the G frame components. I see your point though. They very well could be, and most likely are using the the G's glass and interior trim pieces for that section.

 

The new car's ass is just in a different league! And, as someone else mentioned, I'm beginning to think it might become thought of as a classic.
