But, by Jeep's definition of Trail Rated, you could easily improve a LC to those specs (traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation, water fording). A suspension change and tires (with or without lift) could handle the first four. Again, if that is your use and definition of "best".

yes, but it's still not technically going to be trail rated. that has to be done officially.

They are way overpriced $$$$, some complaints on the goofy doors and rearward visibility.

Automatics from Toyota are terrible, go six speed only, maybe get a used one??

    #1 with Terrarists worldwide!!!
    But they blow them up.........

This is the biggest reason by far.

Why does technically being "trail rated" matter? Are you going to be using it in some form of competition or recreation where you need it to have a particular certification? Or are the bragging rights of owning a "trail rated" vehicle important?

Edit: Nevermind, I've just seen the other thread...

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I sold Jeeps from 1995-2004. I love most Jeeps. "Trail Rated" is a marketing term from Jeep therefore it can only be used by Jeep on a Jeep. The exact definition is "the vehicle must be able to traverse the Rubicon Trail in stock form with minimal body damage and minimal assistance." At the time they came up with Trail Rated I was also told by our Jeep factory rep that all future Jeep vehicles would be Trail Rated. Of course this same guy also said the Wrangler would never be a 2wd. Now Jeep has the Compass, Patriot (I think you can get a 4wd Trail Rated) 2wd Wranglers and 2wd Grand Cherokees that aren't Trail Rated. So it is true that only Jeeps are Trail Rated but it is only because of copywrite. As far as Land Cruisers go the ones with inline 6's are really cool but just like all newer Toyota products the last two generations are a bit soft. Not to say they aren't good off road (there is a lot of trick 4wd stuff under it) but there are probably better options. Weight and on road tuning of the suspension don't help.

My Defender (and I am pretty sure also a Toyota LC) could happily climb its front wheels on my wife's trail rated Liberty's hood and make a good mess of it.

But it is not trail rated! So I'll take it back to LR.

I'll take my Range Rover HSE over any other SUV. As for reliability, I've had it for seven years next month and have never had a problem. I'm holding out for a diesel before I let go of it. (Come on, RR....give us a turbo diesel with about 800 torques!!)

Getting back to Husker's original question/statement/support re: current Landcruiser, I offer this observation:

A small part of our business involve the sale of complete brake systems to armored vehicle builders. Right now the LC system is our #1 seller, primarily to vehicle builders in Europe who turn around and sell the completed vehicles throughout the Middle East and Asia.

Awesome. My feet aren't trail rated, but I'm looking to the government for help. Otherwise, I might have to take them back to the "dealership". Trouble is, they might not fit in there anymore.....

    I like it.

Friend of mine is the fleet mgr for a local co. and all they have is Toyota Camrys for their "runner" cars.

Two are well into the 200,000s, and one is pushing 400,000 miles.

    Not bad for 4-bangers.

No American sedan is going to go 200,000 without an overhaul.

I know the LC isn't a sedan but Toyota's ability to put out good stuff is amazing.
