Not to put the cat among the pigeons but..
In a recent Motor Sport piece Patrick Head is quoted as suggesting that Q may not be as important this year if passing is improved.
His contention is that given the "characteristics" of the Pirellis combined with the anticipated easier (?) passing may cause teams to opt for harder tires at the start expecting to recoup a bad grid position before they need to pit.

    Makes sense to me.

Teams are more likely to set the car up for the race (particularly if rain is in the forecast) and will be willing to compromise on qualifying position.

If we're going to have 4 pitstops per race the starting grid becomes less important.

Coulthard was talking about something similar to this the other day. He was saying Hamilton was out on track with heavy fuel and trailing Schumacher who was also on heavy fuel. Schumacher pits for new tires, Hamilton passes, and Schu catches up and passes Hamilton in something like 3-4 laps. High traffic during a race would not allow for such a quick catch-up session, but the tire strategy is going to seriously throw everything we know about F1 off for a bit. The fast cars will still be fast, but tires will be the grim reaper.

lol. yeah, Schu will be lucky to get 3rd or 4th. better than last year, but no miracles although Schu has said some incendiary rhetoric today in essentially stating they can beat Ferrari and lead the pack in chasing the Red Bulls

and followed by kind words from Alonso from a CNN interview:

Speaking to CNN, Alonso admitted, “If Formula One was 24 cars exactly the same, then Michael would be the driver I would fear most. If you look down the list of drivers on the grid for 2011, then one name stands out above the rest, Michael Schumacher.

The Spaniard added, “Michael is a seven-times world champion and is a legend in Formula One. We have to respect him because he has the ability and talent to do well this season. Not many drivers have had the opportunity to win one world title, let alone two. I have already had nine years in Formula One and hopefully have another six or seven to come,” added the Spaniard.

The wit and wisdom of Fernando Alonso;)

You, of course, discount Michael at your own peril.

I'm sure Alonso is stating what he is as a strategic move. As for Michael, his fate is in his own hands.
