I had Automotovive fever this weekend so I went to my storage garage to hang out for a little while, hadn't been there in a month ):

This place is a mess, and I so I started clearing some stuff out. One of the spots is filled by my 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which I got it out and running. It has some minor issues, but is fun to drive, and most of all, reminds my of the good times I had in High School.

The paint on this car drives me nuts, so I would really like to have it stripped to bare metal (some very minor metal repair needed on one fender), and then resprayed and a new set of faux wood (which I already have) applied. I realize that about 80% of every dollar spent on this car will not be recoverable in the event that I ever sell it. I want to keep the cost in-line. I think if this car had better paint, I would drive it more often, sounds silly, I know, but the fading and peeling become obvious at about 15 feet, I'd like to be more of a 2 footer.

Can anybody suggest a decent local restoration/paint shop? Willing to spend a couple thousand, so hoping to go a step up from Earl Scheib/Macco, but can't justify a $10K paint job.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I'd recommend Ed's affordable automotive repair in Palatine. He can do the restoration and he has a guy who does excellent paint jobs in the price range between Macco and 10k.

If you visit Ed, he'll show you some of the paintjobs his guy did for him.

With My Wagoneer the problem was finding the woodgrain decals large enough.

The Macco on Waukegan Rd in Palatine near the airport did a pretty good job with some older and classic cars when I worked for a dealer in Chicago several years back. As I recall the price was very reasonable. FYI, our own guys did most of the prep work (removing trim, etc) and the paint was put on a little thick which required a wet sand in areas when we got them back.

I'll second Maaco as a good value to shoot the car, the caveat being do your own prep and either pay for upgraded or supply your own paint. A little palm grease for the actual painter on top of the $299 seemed to help my results the one time I did this.

We have a full soda blasting room if you really want to strip it down to bare metal. Based on your budget I would recommend against that route as for we would need to dissassemble the entire vehicle. Judging by the pics the truck does not look that bad. Perhaps address your concerns, scuff and shoot would be the best route for your application.
I am always happy to help. One step into the back of our shop, its like Jalopnik here, and you will see we love random projects

Did you end up repainting the car? Curious how it turned out if so.

Okay - so it took a little longer for me to get started on this project, but I finally decided to do it. I appreciate the recomendations on here.

I went with Autowerks in Northbrook. I have found Ron very easy to work with so far. They have had the car a few weeks now (I'm not in a major hurry). All of the trim, chrome, wipers, handles and glass has been removed. Body is being prepped, and will hopefully get some paint this week. Replacing all of the rubber and window gaskets.

I was very pleased with how solid the car was once stripped down. I guess it pays to by one that has lived in the right part of the country.

Hope to drive it more in 2014!
