THE ANSWER - SCUD SOUND vs 16M & 430

Now this has been a mystery to be since I bought my SCUD why it does not sound as good as a 430 or a 16M without the exhaust valve open. Now after much dectective work, simply here is the answer, the SCUD has a difference air intake resonance system with this extra leg >(see pic below), replace this and all of the world's SCUD are immediately gong to sound a whole lot better !!!!!! I am truly amazed that nobody who I spoke to in Switzerland including people who had worked at the factory could tell me this

So the main pic is scud and small inset is 16m?
430 is similar to 16m part? Have you tried a replacement part yet?

 

Yes 16M & 430 Part are exactly the same it seems, the SCUD coupe has this extra leg which is just a sealed dead end, I am 300% certain this is it, look on Ricambi they even do different sound versions. And the extra leg would deaden the sound as it splits the intake velocity

 

All Scud owners rejoice you no longer need a different exhaust, I just need make sure I get same version as on my Euro 430 Spider and hope it fits as it sounds the B*ll*cks. Note there is a curved external chamber on the outside as well as the little box on the inside

Very interesting finding. You made me discovering that even for the F430, there exists a noise kit like on the picture below. Didn't know that this noise kit is stock on the Scud. Did you validate the noise difference by unplugging the entire intake legs from the airbox hoses?

On my F430, I do have the extra external leg which is the version without the noise kit. But was even wondering what is the noise impact of this extra leg. I'll try it out

Sfefvan if you look carefully, the noise kit is not the one on the SCUD as it has no external resonance airbox on the outside curve, there HAD to be a reason and this is it, I will be going with the 16M & Spider kit for the Scud, which is the same as your 430 not sure how easy it is to fit though at the air intake point on the rear wings

 

Is this something Ferrari did to scuds for reasons of noise limits at track days, one of it's key stomping grounds? Is this fitted in all countries as I have to say the Scuds I have driven appeared to be every bit as loud as the 16m.

Sfefvan I need you to confirm the size of your 430 airtakes as my SCUD's are bigger than the Spider and the mounting points are different. Are your 430 intakes in the rear wings at max 25 CM tall by 13 CM wide pls ?

 

I'd think Ferrari wanted the Scud LOUDER, not quieter. Interesting.

 

Richard I can assure you that isn't the answer to the problem. Agree that the 16m has a better resonator but all that will give you is a slightly better induction roar. It's barely noticeable. If that's what you are looking for then great but it's no alternative to an exhaust.

I replaced the same resonator on my stradale with the challenge part. The challenge car uses a a straight through carbon fibre part. I went to do the same on my 16m and didn't bother as the 16m already has an upgraded resonator. Not sure if the 430C has a carbon version.

 

this is on the induction side, it will NOT do anything for the sound exhaust wise...and that is what you've been complaining about ... the 'lack of sound quality' at closed valve position. all you'll get is a 'throatier' or thinner intake roar.

 

Does not hurt to give it a try....

 

Can you not just unplug the valves and get loud all the time?

 

Whether it works or not, this sure is a good find. If it only makes the induction sound more aggressive, it'd still be worth the trouble.

Personally, I don't like the sound of the Scuderia exhaust, I think a F430 sounds better, and a 16M a little better than the Scuderia but not as good as the F430.

The engine sound in the Scuderia is amazing, but exhaust not so much. Fortunately, right now there are so many aftermarket options.

Do the scud air boxes have the horns?

 

No, they don't have them and as Richard wrote once on another thread, he thought that this makes also a big difference in sound.

 

Can anyone please explain to me what causes the "bark" on startup in F430s? The 360 doesn't seem to be as prominent.

 

tvm for the info Sfefvan, the Bark on the 430 is partly caused by the bigger engine I guess

 

Think it's the ecu that blips throttle on open valves on startup. Lambos do the same, can't remember the 360 doing this.

 

Ok this is what the SCUD version looks like off the car, to be replaced with the 430 Coupe version which is the same design as the 16M & 430 Spider (except the dimensions are slightly different on the spider version)
