A friend who isnt too good with the internet and cars asked me why her Jetta was stalling recently when the car temp is still cold. It happened to her a few times at a red light. It would stutter and then die but she restarted it and it was fine aferwards. It happened 3 times, every time when the car was cold and either at idle or at very slow speed (parking maneuvering).

The Car is a 2001 Jetta with 50k Miles.

I thought it could be a dirty air/fuel filter?

    Any ideas?

Do rpms flucuate when idling? Without pressing the gas, does it rise or decrease?

FWIW, that was going to be my guess even before Guy linked the threads.

Do a tap test on it.

I drove it a few minutes ago and it was bouncing from 800 to 1100 when idling just after we started it. But once the car was fully warm, it wouldn't bounce anymore

ah... I'll take your word for it... I know nothing about punch buggies. Just my hunch from the symptoms.

Check the vacume hose from the brake booster. These crack and cause problems. Get some MAF cleaner at the auto parts store and clean it as well. These cars eat O2 sensors like candy. Replace them every 50,000 miles.

She said her car is going through oil like crazy. She had an oil changed 3 weeks ago and now the car was almost out of it. But it doesnt smoke and she said there is no leaking under the car.
