Alfa-rrari?

Spotted in Clearwater yesterday.

That's a Fiat.

 

Yup, my mistake.

 

I'm okay with this.

1. Everyone knows that's not a Ferrari, so I don't think he intended to deceive anyone.

2. The shield is very small and tasteful, so I think it's more of a tribute than anything else.

3. Before Enzo was allowed to race under his own name, this same symbol was attached to the race cars of. . . well, Fiat.

4. It's certainly less offensive than the Pontiac Fieros or Mr2 Toyotas that sport ridiculously proportioned "replications" of Ferrari bodies. . . and a lot of usually misplaced Ferrari badges.

 

I'm ok with it too. I thought it was pretty cool.

 

It is Italian AND Ferrari "red."

 

So .... it's a Dino?


Actually, my old Alfa mechanic would be incensed at that mistake.
He *hated* my Fiats.
(Some family history thing before they left Italy.)
He wouldn't let me park my 124 out front, when I stopped by. I had to park it in back.

 

As an Alfisti I am deeply offended. How can you guys not know the history of motorsport ... sigh.

Enzo Ferrari's company raced Alfa Romeos NOT FIATs, and yes this symbol started there. It was never on a FIAT.

Please note FIAT had great racing history in it's own right earlier in the motorsport timeline.

Oh and not that it matters, but I do think the Dino Spider was one VERY SEXY looking car!!

 

My Alfa Spider felt like a really *big* car .... compared to the 124 spyder.

The Fiat was a fun car to toss sideways through the dirt.
The Alfa is quite a bit faster on pavement.

I have to say, I'm not thrilled with what Fiat has done to the Alfa marque.
I know the tipo 75 was probably expensive to produce, but it was a great driving machine. Dropping that chassis was the kind of decision you get from an accountant who takes the bus to work.

But FWD? Unforgivable!
Fiat has turned Alfa into just a Camry in Italian shoes.

And they utterly ruined the Alfa dealer network in the 'States. So much so that they dropped out of the US market back in '94.

When I was describing my cars to my new insurance agent, a couple of years back, she asked, "Alfa Romeo? Who makes that?".
I've run into a number of young people in the 'states who had never heard of Alfa Romeo.

(But then, the insurance agent hadn't heard of an EVO either. And an earlier agent looked really worried when I was comparing insurance with a WRX. ("A wrecks?!" ) At least they'd heard of Ferrari.)

Trivia:

Enzo actually managed Alfa's F1 team, which is where the logo originated. It wasn't a separate company.

The first "Ferrari" wasn't actually called a Ferrari, because of an obligation in Enzo's contract not to compete for a given number of years.

When Ferrari first entered F1, it was by buying into the Lancia-Ferrari team.
So buying an F1 team is a traditional way of entering F1.

 

I think it is appropriate to have the Ferrari shield on the car. Look at older Ferrari F-1 cars and you will see the Fiat logo. I don't know about the current F-150 Italia as I have not seen photo's of one up close.

Not quite. The logo originated when Scuderia Ferrari ran the Alfa Romeo's, which were not called F1 cars back then. We are talking P3 Alfa Romeo days. Earlier Alfa Romeos such as the P2 never wore this symbol and yes that was in the days when Enzo worked for Alfa Romeo. The logo stands for Scuderia Ferrari and it is this company where the logo originated.

Alfa Romeo before then used to race with the green 4 leaf clover, which originated in 1923 in the Targa Florio, which they won.

I think you will find that Alfa Romeo sublet the running of their cars to Scuderia Ferrari as a way to get around the company accountants and thus the cost of racing, maybe?. Scuderia Ferrari (founded in 1929) started out preparing cars for rich amature drivers and running the works Alfa Romeos must have helped his company. Scuderia Ferrari finished the final developments of the P3's not Alfa Romeo.

Very incorrect. Scuderia Ferrari first competed in the premier form of motorsport running his own race cars in 1947 or 1948 with the unsuccessful? 125 F1. It was a supercharged v12.

Lancia did not enter F1 until 1955, 5 years after the start of F1 and after Scuderia Ferrari had already won 2 WDC with the Ferrari 500 (52' and 53').
