    A serious question for those who have engaged in this extensive of a restoration: How do you develop a budget for such? There must be something more than just opening one's wallet and saying AH!

    Hi Dodici, this is an extract from an email I was having with one of the previous owners of my car - hopefully this goes a long way to explaining my justification (some are beginning to call it an obsession!) for this project.........

    A bit of my back ground: life long car fanatic, particularly Ferrari. I have owned several of the modern generation but never a classic until recently (could never afford too!). My father also a huge motor sport enthusiast and accomplished rally driver in the 60's & 70's sadly passed away in June 2008, but he left me an inheritance that along with my savings allowed me to pursue my dream and buy the 275GTB with enough to fund the restoration - I know he would have been happy with this, as it was his favourite car as well, and he always believed in living life for the moment.


    And as I have said before - the restoration is for me and hopefully my son in years to come.

    The joys of early Ferraris.
    The boot lid, bonnet and doors are alloy mounted on a steel frame. The perfect set up for galvanic corrosion. To make matters worse they put a little felt piece in between the two at various points. This of course would hold water and make a splendid battery. The alloy skin would often go "bye bye" with the bubbles showing through the paint. The final blow to my 275 ownership was after a cut and weld job on the rusted wheel arches, I took a vacuum to the side of the trunk to the right of the gas tank which was centrally mounted. The hose went right through the trunk floor. As Popeye said "it was all I could take, I couldn't takes no more." End of 275GTB start of 365GTB4.
    I am hopeful that modern day rustproofing will be done during your restoration so you can have many wonderful years with such a great car. Keep the tinworm away.

    I am a lowly Scud owner who has been living vicariously through this thread.

    HUGE props to you for fearlessly tackling this restoration and maintaining your sense of humor and sanity along the way.

    Your old man would no doubt be quite proud of you.

    I have always thought of the 275GTB as the stylistic high water mark for Ferrari in the '60's. I will only own one some day if I can also add on to my "man cave" so that the car can rest on a mirrored stage and simply rotate around for all to enjoy..... When I'm not flogging the daylights out of it of course!!!!

    The joys of old Ferrari ownership, i can imagine your frustrations!

    From your quote above: "This of course would hold water and make a splendid battery" I wonder if Enzo was smarter than we gave him credit for, and was developing an early Formula 1 KER's system!

    When all the old metal is cut out and replaced, the complete shell will be submerged in an anti-corrosion bath and given the same protection as a modern car.

    I must admit when the car was sitting in the garage, i would find myself staring at it for long periods of time, studying the angles and shapes - day dreaming about the restoration and the return to its former glory.

    Time for an update!

    On page 7, I detailed the strip down of the doors. The structures we beautifully preserved and appeared to stand the test of time and abuse very well. But the door skins had seen better days, you can see below there was a lot of panel damage from years of use......

    Simply incredible. These men have the skills of surgeons combined with the eyes of the greatest artists.

    Cutting out the old and replacing with fresh new metal must be so incredibly cathartic.

    Mark what a restoration! You are going to have one hell of a car. Hope you like the photo of my recently fully restored 4 Cam, one of only three steel cars with an outside fuel filler.

    I've been enjoying this unfolding story and wanted to thank you. I know what the costs would be to get this type of work done here in the states. About the cost of the doner car in this case. How are the labor costs in Italy for this type of caliber work? Do you think you'll have double the cost in the car when done?

    Hi, no Brandoli is not involved. Joe Macari has his own metal shop in Italy where a few people are employed for this kind of specialist work. You can see from the work, they are old school trained and the very best in their field. A few of them even worked on the cars when they were in production - hence they are a little old and sometimes a bit slow to Joe's frustration! But there work is outstanding, so as far as i am concerned they can take as long as they like!

    Joe has also got a 250 California, a Daytona, 5 Dinos, and a 330 America in full restoration. He has also just finished a 275 GTS which is stunning in black. Joe is not that computer competent, and he is only now get round to putting a link on his website. He is going to detail all the projects as they are progressing. I will let you know when this is done - it may be a few weeks still.
