First of all, wonderful site you guys have here!

I am the proud owner of two Amalgam 1/8th scale models which are absolutely amazing. I recently found this image on Amalgam's website, and thought it looked stunning:
    http://finemodelcars.com/blog/?p=280

Does anybody have any experience in safely wall mounting an Amalgam model (without the base plate)? Any technical knowledge (I have none, whatsoever) into how it might be done? Seeing that the model is mounted to its base plate from underneath, I figure some wizardry has to be done in order to secure it to the wall while also allowing the screws to secure the model (i.e. I need screws that goes both into the wall and into the car, using the 'spacers' that the car sits on when mounted to the base plate - I hope it makes sense to you guys what I'm trying to convey).

    Is this at all possible?

NB. I hope I'm not committing heresy by considering this! :)

    Welcome!

Those are very nice.......I'm sure they are using a cable suspension of some sort, utilizing the original screw locations of the base plate.

    Think "plate hanger" for comparison....

As for the proper wall anchors, you can go with "stud finder and use a BIG nail" approach, or even find a local Framing Service that offers installation, and they will know.
Heavy weights will need several support points, usually....

One of my car sponsors is a framing service.....so I know "he knows".....

I think you are on the right track, replace the shipping "base" with individual plates and keep the spacers as wall 'stand offs", then figure out support of the individual plates.

Or maybe capture all the support points on a common plate, if possible.
Then the support will be pretty straight forward.

What's the total weight on one of those???

Not at all, BUT if it turns out you work for Amalgam, or one of it's dealers/distributors, this will be considered a "Commercial Spam Post" and they'll blow you out of the water like a Somolian Pirate boat...

    Arrrrgh, mateys......

Spent too much time in a Port Aransas Pirate Bar over the weekend......they were racing Belt Sanders....

I would do this as follows:

A thin strip of hard wood long enough to span the distance between the mounting points on the base of the car and narrow enough to be concealed by the width of the body.
In this strip cut 2 keyhole slots which will require a router or very careful work with a drill. Size the round portion of the slot to the mounting bolts of the model.
Paint the wood strip either the same color as the wall or maybe flat black.
Secure the wood strip to the wall at the appropriate height.
Using the original bolts and spacers position the model so that the bolt heads engage the round portion of the keyhole slots. Slide it down until the bolts engage in the keyhole.
Sit down with a glass of your favorite libation and enjoy your work.

If you are having trouble visualizing how this mount will work look at the way the telephone is secured to the wall in most kitchens.

I don't think he's spamming for Amalgam, but he has posted something similar before... under a different user name.

Stefan/Lynn, I don't know why you felt the need to create a new user name for this post, but it is against the rules here so I'll have to ban the "Lynn" username. I'll give you some time to respond here before I do, just in case you're having difficulty logging in under the old user name for some reason.

From what I'm reading on the Amalgam website shown in the link, is that that is a real car hanging on the wall. Now that would be a display to have at home! :D

    Cheers

I don't know the exact weight (I don't own a scale :)), but somewhere between 10-12 lbs for the car alone. If I'm way off, someone please correct me :)
I think you hit the nail on the head with the replace base plate, which seams kind of obvious now that you've mentioned it. I think it will be able to hold, as I can tip the whole thing as it is now without any problem... It's held in place by five screws and I hear no squeaking :)

    Thanks for the tip!

I hope looking forward it's okay to post the manufacturers name without being held suspicious of circumventing the board rules :D

Interesting concept, racing belt sanders... Power tools has brought upon this world many blessings, it seems ;)

On the issue is the use of multiple user names, I'm about to ban this one. Please either respond now or go back to using the other one.

I had forgotten my password and tried to reset it, but I never received a reset email, so I figured it had been deactivated after a long time of inactivity. I guess I took the easy path and just signed up anew, while I guess I could've sent you guys an email. I wasn't aware of it being a capital offense ;) Please go ahead and deactivate this account, while I hope I can somehow recoup my old one :) Apologies for the trouble.

I just checked and see that you were registered with a different email address back then - one that reveals that you actually do sell these models.

I'm banning the "Lynn" account now. Please renew your password through the "S.H" account (emails will go to your business email address that you used to register that account). If you are unable to do so, send an email to [email protected] and Rob Lay will help you.

By the way, even though you sell these models, I don't think you've ever tried to push them here and have no problem with either of these threads.

As most of you know, I stock the entire range of Amalgam products and distribute their models world-wide. They make many special editions for my gallery exclusively, as well as customized one offs.

Let me know if you have any questions.

hi lynn, i suggest you make the wall receassed to hang the models with a low temperature LED down light on top in the midlle of the model, and the most important is a openable glass window, looks nice without frame just with
two small stainless steel hinges, to protect the model from dust. hope this idea is usefull for you.

That's a very good idea, the dramatic lighting effects!!

    *tips hat*

I have some extra track lighting....LOL!

Mine are incandescent PARs but you are correct LED is ALL the rage now and in the future!
I think my PAR bases can be retrofit....
