My 348 was so unlucky to have recieved, at time of fabrication, a gearshift with a minor metal fracture in it. Today after 21 years, this minor one has become a very major one and,,,,,,,,,,,,, there I was - all of a sudden - in middle fo traffic with a superb Ferrari and .....a broken gearshift in my hand. I will spare you all the quite unique feelings that passed trough my mind and body at that very specific and unique moment in time.;-)))))))))

I am now looking for a used one, part nr should be 139805. Anyone?

    Whoops. :eek::eek:

    It happens often unfortunately. :(:(

I would try and weld, but if you can find a good 2nd hand one, then I would do that.

I hope someone can help. :):)

Happened to me 1 month ago. Managed to find a second hand item. A couple of the Ferrari dismantlers have them here in the UK. 250 pounds from memory.

...can you get me the tel no´s to those Ferrari-dismantlers.

I am in need of a front lip (just above the plastic bumper).

There is one in Canada but the freight cost will be more than the cost of the lip.

    Thanks,

    Hi Philip,

If you still have details, I am off course also in favor of getting these contact details, thanks upfront. I tried welding half-semi but it wasnt strong enough although if the weld would have been better, i think it would have been ok. I tried Eurospares but they charge 500 euro for a so called new one.

Can you post a pic of the broken shifter? Maybe there is another option. There are some very good welders out there. I bet it can be welded and replated. This is of course as long as it is not broken in a critical area. Good luck with your repair.

The first time I had my shift lever break it busted in pretty much the same place yours did. What I did was, to just make it a "short" shifter. We drilled a hole the same diameter of the shaft, and in about an inch, were it broke off the bottom part. Then banged the lever into the hole, and welded it in place. Worked fine for a couple of years until the shaft broke again, then I just got a good used one.

    Hi Ernie,

I like that one, are you saying that you drilled a hole in bottom part (the one on picture) and then "skinned" the upper part - so it would fit - and then slided both parts together and welded them. The two parts must be close fit then? otherwise they "play" correct?

    Yup thats what we did.

But don't forget, it got welded in place. But yet we made it a snug fit. It's been a while since it was done, but I think we even turned down the lever a little bit and made the hole in the bottom piece smaller too. That way there was more "meat" to support the shifting.

    Nope.

It broke above the weld in a new spot. That's when I had to pony up the money to buy a used unit. The first repair only cost me a 12 pack of Bud Lite. :D

Sorry to hear that, I am sure was embarrassing ! However, it's better a simple problem like this than a bad gearbox !

If you find a good welder that knows what they are doing, they will grind an angle on the end of the shift shaft and on the top of the lower section. Then they will jig it up so that they are in line with each other. Then they can weld it start in the center and work their way out until the gap is filled in. then it can be machined down to the original shape. You may want to have it plated after that. Not sure what a used one is going to run you and it depends on if you have a welder friend who gets paid in beer. :D

It's actually pretty common for cars that get driven alot. I'm on my 3rd shifter.

There are a few problems in my opinion with the shafts. 1) They are made way to thin. Especially for the crappass way the 348 gearbox shifts. It is NOT the smoothest shifting box. 2) Poor choice of metal used. The chrome plating is what keeps it from wearing out faster than it would if it wasn't plated. The metal gated shifter wears down the chrome plating and then when it gets to the softer metal underneath = SNAP. 3) I already mentioned it in #2 but, it's the gated metal shift plate. The metal to metal contact isn't a good idea if you don't want the shaft to break.

But most (not all but most) Ferrari's have a metal to metal shift??......do they all have the same problems as the 348?
