    Probably to someone, who belonged to the US-troops in Germany.

    I`ve seen US-spec Maseratis, Porsches, BMWs, Mercedes-Benz, etc. at United States European Command in Stuttgart.

    Those are all US bound cars. Back then the factory shipped them in open trucks with white styrafoam. I've got a stack of pictures just like that from a 1989 factory tour.
