....and would have to have a completely different dynamic. Can you imagine that many negative G's going into such a sharp left-hand corner? Would the immense downforce of an F1 car allow them to take it flat out or would they have to lift?

I think you will probably throw up taking Eau Rouge in reverse at high speeds!

Pretty sure the current gearbox upshifts by itself and downshifts are manual with the left hand, so driving an F1 car one-handed is easy!

Totally epic, awesome. Pick on the Lotus all you want but it's more car than 99.9999% of us will ever drive.

In high downforce settings I believe an F1 can "stick" on the roof at around 70 mph. Depending on downforce configuration the car should be able to do it just fine. The stomache of the driver on the other hand....

I would love to try it!! :D

I've read that elsewhere...wasn't sure how true it was. Amazing.

I would too....talk about fun. I would probably have to have a puke valve on my helmet though :)

You mean just for this stunt? Normal F1 cars these days have 4 paddles. 2 for the clutch, one for upshifts and the last one for downshifts.

I remember reading about a driver who was incredibly skilled at racing simulators and was quite impressive in translating that to an actual indycar, but had to stop because his body truly couldn't handle it, pretty amazing.

I remember the first time I ever felt 2 - 3G's in a corner, it scared me! Not necessarily the speed at which the corner was taken, but the fact that I couldn't breathe. I wasn't expecting that! For the first month or so I had to plan my breathing on a corner by corner basis. Just watching F1 races it's easy to forget the forces and stresses that the drivers are dealing with, not just the cars! I think it's truly amazing the level of fitness that F1 drivers have to achieve!!

    I'm pretty sure you're mistaken......

They had full auto shifting a few years back, but IIRC when the FIA banned that, it was banned for both up & downshifts.

    Cheers,
    Ian

if an SLS can do it so can an F1, hehehe. I'm surprised Mythbusters hasn't tested this theory yet...

actually they can up and down shift with either hand, instead of pulling back like in a road ferrari they can push the paddles forward to up/downshift depending on which side.

so if he was using his right hand to hold the phone he could upshift by pushing the left hand paddle forward

He was able to ride a year on his name but not more.
