what's feeling proud of myself for fixing my car so I took it for a spin. 30 miles or so into the drive, I hear a crunching sound ad if I ran over a beer can. I pulled over and the engine cut off. I turned the key and the car started but the engine is making a horrible sound as if there is a wrench in the engine or the belts or something and there is a ticking sound coming from the fuse box (it seems).
All I did was change out the crank sensor. I doubt I had anything to do with this. Oh well. Does anyone have any idea what could.have broken loose?

No idea, but I wish you luck.

DO NOT start it again until you can rule out some of the more expensive stuff.

    fingers crossed for you.

I'm unloading my car at Dave Helms' shop right now. I hope he can find time to look at it next week.

I have no idea either but I'm curious did you lose power to the wheels before the engine cut out?

Dropped a valve. Engine is toast. Just put a $15,000 paint job on it too; not to mention the euro conversion.
Anyone got an extra engine laying around?

So sorry to hear, Did they say if it was an exhaust valve ( sodium filled) or intake valve?

Is the whole engine really a write off? (not rebuild-able)
Can you get a QV engine instead and "upgrade" a bit? 328 3.2 L perhpas?

    Good luck to you.

    :(

Too bad Mark. Hopefully piston is ok and you just need a head redone.

Well, if it's any consolation, you're not the first to have this happen! My engine jumped a belt on the drive home from my $12K paint job and entirely laid waste to my front bank. A year and a half later, and more spend on the engine rebuild than I spent to purchase the car, and it's almost back on the road again.

I thought sodium filled valves were limited to carb cars.

Sodium valve. Not sure what I'm going to do next. I'm checking my options. Ideally, I'll get a 328 engine in there with a lot more power. Not sure how much money things are going to cost. (I forgot to mention that I just spent $11k on the engine 1 week before I had it re-painted) When it's all said and done, I could have had a nice 355. Not sure I would want one though.
Which would you rather have for $65k?
350 hp euro 308 (souped up 328 engine) with a flawless paint job
    375 hp 355?
I'm in too deep now. Gotta go with the 308.

Tough luck. How recent is the engine work? Did it include head work? Can you be sure the valve that failed vs. a valve keeper not installed correctly?

    Timeline:

Gave the car to Dave Helms last October
Dave had the car for a couple weeks or so doing a major service, installing new ignition computers, new cap and rotor, new coolant hoses throughout the engnie etc.

    One week later:
Woman with no insurance tapped me in the front end

I decide to go euro since the grill/spoiler is damaged and while I'm at it, let's paint the whole car black.

5-1/2 months later, I get the car back.

Two days later, the crank sensor goes out.

I spend a week and a half changing the gear oil and crank sensor (I'm a ****ty mechanic). Car works great again.

Next day I drop a valve.

I still have a good life (Great job, great friends, nice home, Girlfriend weighs less than 120#, etc.) Can't complain too much.
    Mark.

I wouldn't go that far, but the car might spontaneously combust one night if it were me.

Of course I'm into mine almost as deep and no work done "inside" the motor yet.

Hi Mark, sorry to hear about this. I was looking forward to seeing it with the wheels I sold you. If I hear of anything up here in the GTA with respect to an engine I will PM you.

Jeeze, reading of this failure (again) has me feeling squeamish and I haven't even bought one of these cars yet!!!

I think once I finally find the one I want, I'm going to insist that after insuring that the engine is in good order, it will not be run again until I've pulled it and gone through every mm of it-and gotten rid of the sodium filled valves, which I will ceremoniously destroy in an active volcano.

Mark, why is the engine toast if all you did is drop one valve?
