Gentlemen - forgive me if I am posting in the wrong forum but I wondered if any of you could help me? I am looking for TWO Lucas 100psi+ Fuel Injection "Bombs" - as fitted to Ferraris and Maseratis around the mid-1960s. They are for my current project (non-Ferrari - details/pics may be seen at www.xj13.eu - the name of the website may give the game away .....) Condition is not important - even just outer casings would suffice - although restorable/working units would be preferable! Here is a link to a picture of such a "bomb" (also attached): www.xj13.eu/xj13/LucasBomb.jpg Image Unavailable, Please Login
Check with Kinsler Fuel Injection - They may be able to point you to a period pump. They are the Lucas gurus here in the US. http://www.kinsler.com/page--Lucas--11.html
Perhaps we should combine our efforts Alberto - there have to be some going spare somewhere in the world? I had already tried Kinsler and Powerprops but drew a blank - thanks Ney and TomGT for your suggestions anyway. I really don't want to use alternatives as the car has to be "right" - so the search goes on ....
This is the first time I've seen such detail of the XJ13 engine. It's much different than the production engine in almost every way.
Neville, for my purpose, all I need is the bomb itself, no need to be working, as using modern, reliable components from....Kinsler. If you also only need the outside, and had engineering drawings, we can make the cans here without any problem. Even a beat up sample would work. I assure you there are quite a few lingering in some old forgotten box... Lovely project you have going! Regards, Alberto
Careful Tim - it is dangerous to start me off on the XJ13 project .... do you have a few days to spare and a supply of cold beers? Yes - the engine is very different to the SOHC solution they eventually settled on. The SOHC was very much the brainchild of Walter Hassan who was absorbed into Jaguar when the company he worked for, Coventry Climax, was taken over by them in 1963. When he arrived Bill Heynes' DOHC (XJ13) engine was about to hit the test bed - designed with racing in mind. By the end of 1965 Jaguar's attentions were diverted by the BMC takeover, changes in Le Mans regulations, financial difficulties and the spectre of the GT40; so they decided to concentrate on a road engine instead. I believe even Ferrari were concerned about the Ford invasion and didn't attempt to meet it head on but scaled back the factory entry to only two P3s (neither of which finished)? Hassan employed Harry Mundy and set about designing a new V12 engine for the road. The resultant SOHC engine continued in production well into the 1990s.
I would try Crosthwaite and Gardiner, they reproduce a lot of lightweight E-type Jaguar parts. The fuel pump you show was also used in them. Cheers Jim
I finally found a pair of "used but good" Lucas "Bombs" from Bill McGrath Classic Maseratis (www.classicmaseratis.co.uk). It was posting on this forum that resulted in this success - thank-you posters! I will shortly be the proud owner of them and wanted to pass on the fact that Bill McGrath turned out to be very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, friendly and helpful - certainly worth a call if you are looking for something similar. To make things even better - their prices ended up around one tenth of Kinsler! I have absolutely no affiliation with his company but pass this on as a satisfied customer and for the benefit of other posters looking for similar parts.
