The wheel/tire combo on an aftermarket 17 is almost certainly heavier than the stock speed line 16's impacting unsprung weight. Between this narrow sidewall, how does this impact ride and steering feel? I own cars with 19's and 20's but they were designed for it. Years ago I owned a Porsche that I upsized from 16 to 17 and although cornering improved, subjective steering response was not as good and the car had more of a tendency to tramline. Wondering what others have experienced.

I went from fairly old michelin, "Energy" 205/70-14s on the stock wheel to 225/40-18 & 255/35-18 on 360 BBS wheels.
I recall being pleasantly surprised with a very small, (almost no) increase in harshne. Similarly, the steering effort, at very low speeds was about the same as the stock tires.
As you might expect, there was a massive increase in grip and steering precision.
It was the single best improvement i have done to the car.

I have 17's on my gt4 from the 14's it was a huge improvement in everything , it may not be relevant to the 328 though from 16 to 17's but the tire selection is that much greater

355 18" wheels on my 328. I'm certain they're a heavier combination than the stock ones, but I wanted the look. Really no change in the feel of the car, the handling is slightly sharper but not significantly different.

Years ago I put 17s and 225s and 245s on an 89 328. I weighed them and IIRC they were about 5-6 lbs heavier per wheel. I used the same brand/model tires. It felt like there was a little bit of extra grip as expected. Ride wasn't really any different, but I could definitely feel the wheels bounce more on rough pavement. 328s have pretty soft suspension which I'm sure doesn't help. On 328s, I think handling is limited not by tire width but by excess suspension movement. After a while, I went back to the stock setup. It was just more pleasant to drive. If you want to make a switch, I recommend making an effort to keep the overall weight the same. If you can do that, the results could be pretty good.

i have 348 wheels (17 s) on my 89 328,,with P ZERO s 245 45 17 s in back,,235 45 17 s in the front,,,,and with my stock suspension,,and this combination i.get the absolute best handling out of my car,,,,no 328 with stock wheels will outhandle my car..,,if my 328 was a GTB,,,it would handle even better,,mine is a GTS.....im not sure if 18 inch wheels would be better...but i know the ride would be considerablly harsher,as it is,,my car feels every little imperfection on the street,,,

neat thread. really like the way my 328 drives. Thread makes me wonder if poly bushings with more modern wheels would be fun or not.

I put new Dunlop diarrhea tires (whatever they are called) on my 328.

Have the same tires on my 911 widebody, and on my sold 85 911 targa.

Like the tires, can never remember the name. :)

Love the look of the 360 wheels, always wondered what they felt like.

Going to leave my car alone for now, but this is a great thread.

Thanks for all the feedback. No doubt in my mind going from 14 - 17 would be a big improvement. Response seems mixed on 16 to 17. As hardtop points out the most likely culprit is unsprung weight. As the stock speedlines are already pretty light, it will be difficult to compensate for this. Even recent testing on cars with modern suspensions have shown that flat out track performance might be slightly better with a larger wheel but throw in some uneven pavement and other issues that come up day to day, and it is not so clear cut. Really like the way the 17's look on the 328 (feel 18's look out of place on this car) but my concerns are precisely what hardtop outlines. Would be great if others weigh in (no pun intended).
