Fellas, I hope you can lend me a little advice. I just bought a nice 1970 BMW 2002. I've put about 500 miles on it and 2 issues have shown up. 1. Once the transmission is warm it is VERY difficult to engage 1st gear at a solid, total, 5 second standstill without grinding the gears. I can occasionally "luck" it in, but mostly there will be some grinding. I've tried every variation of technique I can think of. This only happens in first gear, all the rest work flawlessly hot or cold, going up or down. As you may know it is a hudraulic clutch. Fluid is correct. I don't see any way to adjust it. I don't know if its the clutch not fully disengaging or something wrong with the tranny. 2. The car "diesels" a little upon shutdown. I had another 2002 about 25 years ago and I remember it dieseling as well but I can't remember the remedy. Thanks Guys!!
1. This happend to me in my work car and my gearbox went bust a month later. Start looking for one gearbox or the best advice...just show it to a mechanic. Maybe he can save it.
I had a similar problem with second gear in my -82 Volvo 244 Turbo. I drained the gearbox and replaced the fluid with Redline gearbox fluid; IIRC the application said "Ford" but works fine in my car.
You've probably tried this, but maybe a good double clutch? Sorry, but some people have never heard of double clutching (like me until about 5 years ago). My pops had the same thing in a 1979 911SC, first gear would never go unless you doubled it with all others just fine. A year after purchase, he had to do a full rebuild for about $7000. Not trying to scare ya, just preparin' ya. Hopefully 2002 parts are cheaper than 911 parts.
I REALLLLLY like MrV's answer best! I think a gallon of tranny fluid would be great....but I worry DAD might be right.
I'm no expert but dieseling can be caused by carbon build-up in the engine or on the spark plugs. Have the plugs been changed recently? Also try a fuel intake cleaner. Also try a higher octane fuel. Carb could be running too rich also. If none of this "shade tree" advice works, take it to a competent mechanic.
Now that you mention it, first tank was premium, didn't seem to do it, second was regular, thats when it started. ...that might be it. I was thinking, low compression engine etc. I just re-read the eBay ad, it is higher compression:
I'm no expert, but this doesn't mean I won't chime in. When I used to have this problem in old VWs, it would sometimes work to bump second gear and then try first. But, trust me, this wasn't easy at 20 below. Sounds like the synchos are shot. This could be caused by hot spots or weak sparks. On my old Triumphs, the first thing I would do is retro fit electronic ignition. Motor would run like a top. Good luck. Dale
If you are having trouble engaging 1st when standing still it is likely the hydraulics (clutch isn't quite disengaged). Try pumping the pedal a couple times before trying it (might help). Probably need a rebuilt master and/or slave cylinder.
Thanks fellas. I suppose I need to take it to the local 02 expert. He uses all redline lubes. If a fresh fluid change doesn't do it, I suppose he can diagnose it.
2002 needs premium gas. If the going into 1st gear is a problem after you have brought the car to a stop you might try bumping the lever toward 2nd and then going into 1st. I had an ALFA GTV that would crunch 1st if you went straight into it, after awhile it was second nature to pull toward 2nd ( don't need to go into 2nd just pull toward it) this stopped things from spinning before going into 1st. Good luck. 2002's are great fun. Regards, Terry W. Phillips
Thaks Terry, sound like you and Dale have the same experience. BTW, I reviewed the ad, it did mention the tranny/clutch:
1st to 2nd synchro is notoriously weak. Find a 320i 5 speed. It's a direct bolt in swap. Your synchro issue will be gone and you will have an extra gear for the highway. Your dieseling is most likely from low octane gas try running premium.
Probably extra drag from the pilot bearing not running freely, or the clutch not fully disengaging as noted earlier. This is causing the input shaft to spin even though the clutch is disengaged.
Back in the early 80's I spent a couple of years wrenching 2002's in a Boulder, CO shop as I was between engineering jobs. Pulled many an '02 gear box apart and this sounds like a weak synchro...one that grabs well enough when the oil is thick but looses friction as the gearbox oil heats up. Maybe try changing the fluid. Some shops have alternately used various wts of engine oil and even ATF in gearboxes so go back to 80 or 90wt. As I recall, the big no-no is to use 90wt hypoid...the hypoid tended to work on the syncros in a bad way. BTW, syncros for all of the gears are identical and have known some mechanics who would move worn syncros from 4th gear to 1st or 2nd to save a few bucks on a tranny rebuild...hopefully this is not the case with your unit. Also worth bleeding the clutch master and slave....just to cross it off the list. As for dieseling, another foggy memory with the carb'ed cars was that there should be an electric solenoid that is supposed to cut off fuel supply when the ignition key is shut off. Maybe someone has "cleverly" bypassed that system allowing the engine to run on. BTW...still have a soft spot for the '02's and still own a '73 Touring tii. Hope this helps... Brock
What is your idle speed, some good suggestions on the running on, but if idle is high, carb throttle plate is open too far and allowing it to pull too much air and fuel as you turn it off.
I think all the tips have been posted by now. Just wanted to congrat you on you purchase, in between friends we had both a few BMW 2000's 4-door as well as 2002's. Agile, nice, grippy and quick little cars. Driving and drifting at high speeds in wet weather, during winters and through the French Alps was great, we miss them!
Thanks guys. I tried the "2nd gear bump" and it seems to work. All but one time so maybe that one was me. Anyway, I have my X-AS tires (from coker) going on thursday and the body work scheduled for 4 days next week. (A little rust in rockers and the driver door needs tweaking). Then I'll need to buy a polyester leisure suit, start working on my Afro and eBay some platform shoes. Addendum; In case anyone missed my 600 other threads about this car, here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270731350492&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_28670wt_1167 .
